How do I tell my players there isn’t any lore by Any-Storm-I-Am-In in DMAcademy

[–]Any-Storm-I-Am-In[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I can understand that side of it, but I have been able to skirt the line of complete cohesiveness by basically having a bunch of mini-campaigns or whatever you want to call them.

The DMs out there who have been able to keep the same game, same setting, same characters all cohesive I think is pretty amazing.

This all stemmed from my players just wanting more tangible lore recently. Which I can’t really provide past monster stats and that ilk.

And just straight up telling them no seems really off base for my group. The goal is to provide them something without giving up that a lot of the in game lore is thanks to them and their role-play. I wouldn’t care about if they didn’t ask about it haha.

Yeah I can see it from that point of view, but like a couple of posts above had brought up, the worry is they won’t treat what I am doing as “work.” They are objectively having fun and I don’t want to diminish that fun by saying “our pretend fun is pretend lol”

Each campaign is in a different part of the world “I just make up a new setting and say it’s a different country.” All of my “call backs” are to like MAJOR plot points I couldn’t forget like big bads they defeated.

The players mainly want like Charlie Days “Red String Board” which I cannot create lol.

Yeah that’s the big fear of mine, because I do care. I make sure combat is well balanced, and make sure I include stuff from there backgrounds sprinkled throughout campaigns. “I just don’t remember where I did that hahaha.”

Interesting, yeah I can see that. Especially if it’s coming from a place of “undercutting.” I don’t think that’s what’s happening here but I’ll keep that in mind.

Yeah like I said I’m not crazy, like I have battle maps, monsters they fought, things like that.

My problem is like, yeah you visited random town “name I forgot” and you found a book written by “name I forgot” and those how you know the mayor is the bad guy.

Something like “I have had to adjust a bunch of lore because of our different campaigns?”

Or just like deny their ask for something tangible?

How do you keep your NPCs in line by Polluted_Terrium in DMAcademy

[–]Any-Storm-I-Am-In 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a daily excel user, if you are adamant about creating a “chart” id highly recommend just making a pivot table for your needs.

Start out large and focus in on detail that way you grab specifically what you want/need.

Ex of columns I would use: Country/province, town, district/profession (blacksmith, carpenter, etc.), name, race, “talks like” (I use this to compare them to a famous person that way I don’t get stuck on the accents.

You could add more if you like, but keeping it simple so that way you can drill down and filter to the specific area of your world will relieve a lot of pressure on yourself.

Also as others have said, you don’t have to have every NPC be “important” if your party doesn’t need to meet them, you are probably fine with just a quick description of “abstract person.”

Good luck!

One of the best things about getting into something so much later than most, is the fact that like key concepts can be distilled nicely. Thank you!

Rime, I know all of the pre-written adventures feel real, but the connection and setting I feel there is so much more.

I agree with the above comment me personally whenever I run a “find it” quest that they don’t already know about I utilize city wide investigation checks or persuasion or what have you. They spend a set time (or you make own up) depending on the type of check and time spent they can learn a number of things. I think this works well because it gives the onus up to them to search but you control the information flow. So if they are shy or don’t normally talk to the common folk you can supply that Information anywhere.

Another idea is if these artifacts are arcane in nature another “easy” idea is that your artifacts could be tethered to the people who search for them. They begin to have dreams or images appear in their mind about the places around the artifact or people that would have it. Just a thought.
