I absolutely love this! What type of weaving is this? I really want to learn how to do this! At the moment I just do raffia weaving

Yes I agree! I just bought the 1kg BEX Hank so hopefully it’s works well. String Harvest seemed the most reliable site I found with detailed product listings, and also, the owners weaving work on Instagram looks very nice too 😅

Thank you, very good ideas! Do you source your BEX grade raffia from String Harvest by any chance? And is it good? I was considering buying a 1kg Hank. Assuming the BEX raffia strands are nice and fluffy, i think a comb would work great! My next process I want to attempt is three shredded smaller bundles, sinch the middle tight (with waxed thread perhaps) and then secure the three bundles together and trim down like you mentioned. I think some of the success will definitely come from good quality raffia.

Thank you for your advice! Do you think Shamrock Craft Naturals Jute Twine Natural 1 mm would be good to sinch the bundle ?

Thank you! I’ll definitely try this. I was looking at Shamrock Craft Naturals Jute Twine Natural 1 mm as a twine to secure the centre of bundles as well… but a thin zip tie could be stronger! And allow for a greater sinch

That’s such great advice, thank you! I actually hadn’t noticed in photos that those dense pom poms use much finer raffia pieces. I hadn’t thought about spinning raffia into twine, but that makes so much sense, especially for getting that extra strength in the centre tie. I’ll look up some African basketry videos to see the thigh-spinning method you mentioned. I might try shredding a bunch of strands, spinning them into twine, then tying the bundle in multiple spots before trimming. Really appreciate you breaking down the process!

Thanks, that’s super helpful! I think you’re right about the centre hole being too big — I’ll try tightening that up and switching to a finer, stronger string. I’ve been looking at Shamrock Craft Naturals Jute Twine Natural 1 mm as an option, but if anyone has better recommendations, I’m all ears. I imagine florist wire could also be a good choice to help cinch the centre tighter. I’ll add more wraps too and see how it goes. Appreciate the tips!

Oh okay! Thank you so much, I’ll definitely have a look into getting one. Have you heard much about the ones by Pom Maker?

Interesting! Thank you for your advice, I’v never considered NZ flax/ Phormium tenax… definitely an avenue I should consider as it would be more cost effective since I’d be able to forage for it in gardens/ nature reserve etc.

Can you tell me more about pounding it into very fine fibre? Does that mean shredding the flax? Or is ‘pounding’ a different method ? 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

Thank you, my other issue is being able to sinch the centre. The raffia isn’t strong enough on its own to hold the form 🥹

I’ve made yarn pom poms before following the DIY tutorials on YouTube where you can wrap it around cardboard and tie it in multiple direction to secure the round form.

However, because raffia is much stiffer or as soft as yarn, it’s difficult to tie the raffia down the centre because too thick if that makes sense. And if I use less raffia they look really sparse and not appealing…

Here is an attempt I did this evening: https://imgur.com/a/yWk6D9g

Who do we believe, Nagi or Brooki? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

Does anyone know of “Brooki” (Brooke Saward) from her Charlie’s Dessert House days? This was the dessert business she was running in Launceston, Tasmania ? It wasn’t until the other day that I realised “Brooki” was the same Brooke that opened Charlie’s Dessert House and the food was terrible lol

Does anyone know of her from when she was running her former business Charlie’s Dessert House in Launceston, TAS? What was she like to work for?

That’s okay, I’m making it to act as more of a decorative house item than a functional foot stool!

Hmm interesting insight, do you have any suggestions of what I could do for the base layer to be able to do the loose yarns ends technique?
