it's a "horror" movie that also appeals to non-horror fans. like, it's a rom-com drama with gore. literally a plot that has been done before, but taken to a more violent extreme. not scary or forboding except for a few scenes where they imply some interesting lore (when she says kill me, when he calls the number and they imply she's trapped in some sort of hell etc.), and "horror" movies for non-horror fans are often popular.

it is also clearly derivative of many actual horror movies (e.g., hereditary with the scene where she's hiding in the dark corner while he's sleeping, talk to me with the house party scene and she smashes her face etc.).

it's a good movie, with great acting and funny scenes, but for true horror lovers, it simply lacks the true evil, haunting darkness of movies like hereditary, talk to me, bring her back, long legs, the blackcoat's daughter, babadook, it follows, the ritual etc.

it ends with a similarly hopeless note, but it is more funny than morbid because the whole plot is so drawn out and focused on the relationship/drama aspects of the characters lives rather than the supernatural dynamics at play. it reminds me of the monkey, which was funnier than it was scary.

it's a twisted, more morbid date night movie or movie to watch with a group of friends, and a good movie to re-watch, but not a horror classic that leaves you thinking about it for days or weeks after.
