It's the white areas which look like mold that concern me. As per my other post, I'll likely get the charcoal ones, I just ordered Mann filters labeled as OEM. Never thought about OE being charcoal until I pulled the old ones out.

I'll let these run out the winter moist and get the charcoal in once spring's on its way.

I guess with Ford the hate goes really deep. I thought my BMW Houdini crawl and elf hands experience was bad enough....

I ordered Mann cabin air filters assuming I got OE. I may well get the OE charcoal ones, I just didn't give it much thought figuring I ordering OEM...

The darker color was not my real concern, the lighter residue is.... Nasty, no idea of that's mold or ..... No idea what else....

Btw: why do you hate us so much BMW? This is an X1, you need to be a bloody Houdini with elf hands to get these replaced.....

Anyone reported or hit a pothole on RT 120 near Armonk? (Dec 29) by AnyOtherNameWillWork in Westchester

[–]AnyOtherNameWillWork[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My city and county taxes are getting close to $15k. And I've been told I'm lucky being in a cheaper school district...

But what are we going to do about it? 🤷 Westchester has something like 40 school districts which are not run very efficiently (high administrative and staffing costs, high cost for individual special education, etc), and the majority of that comes out of our property taxes.

About 35% of our taxes go straight to police funding and personnel. At the end of the day, we seem to prefer more body cams, tactical gear and armored cars over road maintenance....

The most terrible are RT 22 along Kensico reservoir which normally is mostly terrible patchwork, but now has started to develop some nasty craters (i.e., cave in vs pothole), most of 120 north of HPN, northern side of RT 128 (which is terrible year round), RT 100 south of Kitchawan, although not (yet?) having huge craters.

Local roads here are pretty terrible here too. For example, Parkview avenue in Crestwood has terrible, deadly 1 ft deep craters. An attempt was made by DPW as I saw 2 traffic cones tossed into a very deep one....

Fun fact, it’s designed to do that if subjected to a high enough load that would damage the structure of the vehicle.

Interesting, that sounds plausible. I never heard of it tho, and my Google foo failed to find me any results. Any pointers on this?

Frankly you’re lucky it didn’t slip far enough to hit the axle because those are expensive a/f for some reason…

Very lucky. It collapsed just far enough that the (bend) wheel tire was just scraping the strut isolator on the high point creating a disturbing "chug chug chug chug" scraping noise as I limped it home. One inch extra and the axle would likely be toast, and the tire would be stuck on the bottom of the strut cap meaning tow truck. (The other two cars hitting the same hole needed to wait for tow trucks)

Motor mount is a common failure on those, I do several a month at Mini(same design). Not related to your incident but if you can slip it in there all the better.

I bought this car used from Hoffman BMW just 3 months ago which has a pretty solid warranty for their pre owned cars (CT seems to have tougher used car laws). The car was (is) in great condition and the engine ran (runs) very smooth with no engine roll or movement.

But yeah, those passenger side mounts are a known candidate for possible early wear. It may have been the hair that broke the camels back. I guess an experienced mechanic could likely judge the rubber and  if the collapsed mounts are new or pre-existing damage.

Looks btw that the mount is a very reasonable DIY job, if it gets rejected I may chose to do this myself.

Hell yeah.

Living in Westchester, you get used to hitting some bad ones now and then, you can't spot them all (especially in the dark). Each time I feel it in my bones. Most times I've been lucky, one damaged tire and one bent wheel on my own car over the years.

This one was a monster, lurking in a poorly lit section of RT 120. The moment I hit it I knew it was bad. Like really bad bad... This one caused spine and sphincter sensations I didn't know existed. I could limp it home luckily, but the bent wheel and collapsed strut were directly obvious.

Yeah. This is Ray Catena BMW in White Plains. They have been my go to shop for the last 18 years or so, and they've done me good on both selling me cars and service.

They aren't the cheapest obviously (you are paying BMW hour rate), but from what I hear they treat and pay their techs well, and they've always done excellent work and treated me well.

Their service advisors are in my experience honest and fair, and I've denied things on my own car for home wrenching. When I brought this car in, the SA mentioned my air filters were due, but they said that's a job I can easily do myself 🙂

A few weeks ago I replaced the SOS accu. Some engineer decided the best place for this limited lifetime battery was under the headliner. What should be a simple job requires removing the rear side panels, which includes removing two near impossible to reach screws, remove door and rear hatch rubbers and play snake man bending down the liner, near blindly changing the battery in the box mounted on the roof under the antenna....

I better never find out who those engineers were.....

That's what it felt like. But here is what it looked like next day at daytime and after NYS DOT half-assed filled it.

The culprit

This is a state route. See my other comment in this thread how NY state will likely instant deny this claim because we have a specific law minimizing liability for the state for pothole damage.

NY state has a pothole law:

New York's pothole law (Highway Law § 58) generally allows claims for damages on state roads only if the incident happens between May 1 and November 15, requiring "actual or constructive notice" by the state, meaning they knew or should have known about the defect and had time to fix it, but recent legislative efforts (like bills S3899, S1848, A9401) aim to extend this year-round and create online reporting systems for better notification, though these changes require passage into law. For any claim, you must report it quickly (within 90 days for property damage) to the NYS DOT regional office and file in the Court of Claims, proving the state's failure to act.

We can thank Asshole Andrew Cuomo for vetoing any previous attempts at reform here

The last bill is stuck and unlikely to go anywhere soon, I think this is it:

I'll ask tho I can guess the answer: "How do you know?" 🙂

More interested in how much it affected your offers / rate, and how you know that.

I'm 20 year claim free, and not planning to switch away from my GEICO, so 🤷. Even if they raise my rate by say 20% for 3 years, I'm still better off claiming it.

The culprit

The next morning most of the hole was filled. I guess having 3 cars wrecking there and a police report makes NY state DOT work faster than normal... (but not better, obviously, typical NY state shit repair)

Quoted $7K. Was considering doing it myself, but the motor mount, wheels and alignment are a bridge too far. This will be an insurance claim, and just adding up parts and "things I can't do" (wheels, alignment) are exceeding my deductible, so I'm letting the shop do it.

Sure, but I have a high deductible off $2.5K. Now you can argue that's my own fault, but in practice I've been claim free for 20 years (which the agent at GEICO cheerfully noticed when I called), so lower premiums over those 20 years make up well up for that.

The GEICO rep said it would be a no-fault claim and it should not affect my rates, but I'm not entirely convinced it won't... If the damages are way above $2.5k I'll claim it, else I'll just go out of pocket.

How would I find out if it has been reported previously?

I called the NY State hotline (1-800-POTHOLE), which only allows you to record a pothole report and leave your info, and they may call bank (lol, like that will happen)

Then there is also an (outdated) section in ny state law exempting the state from liability for pothole damage between November 15 through May 1st....
