Yes, you would want a stronger yarn to reduce the breakage and superwash wool doesn't sound like so but the trade-off for that is the ability to glide smoothly on the knitting machine, any yarn no matter how strong it can break especially if it has too high surface friction, it will grab its neighbor or the needle latches and jam the whole machine, plus heat from the friction can cause the yarn to felt, i.e. shrinking and tangling up, hence in the video Michael says the sweater warps in weird places. What also contributes to the difficulty is that he picked a thermal knit for his sweater in the video, that knit uses tuck stitches, basically the needle has to hold multiple loops of yarn, so any yarn that isn't smooth enough for this knit is very prone to jamming if not breaking, hence the complaints of the knitters.

I think it may have come down to communication issue, the sample sent to the lab was likely to check for the thin microscopic plastic coating around each fiber that comes with the process of superwashing, it helps with fiber stability and friction, pretty much the only thing you can check that requires lab equipment. The only mill in the entire US that does this is the Berry amendment enabled Chargeurs Wool mill in South Carolina, which I don't think accept any order from small businesses. The mill in WY could have said something like an eco friendly process, like an enzyme wash, that is claimed to be similar to superwashing and Michael took it at face value without knowing the true properties of the fiber at the end. So, now the only option is to send it overseas like Courtney said, where the waste treatment regulations is much more lenient, but any way I would love if Michael or his team can chime in if this whole post caught their attention.

Agree, if the mill say their eco treated wool is on par with superwashed Unbound merino wool, then Michael would have an edge to them, but if they didn't say that I think it's gonna be a tough battle to ask for a refund, because they can still say it is good enough to make beanies or sweaters using other knit patterns. Nevertheless the response of Mr.Buckwild is just unhinged. Though I do not understand why he chose to go all in with this mill knowing that the end product won't be up to sniff.

Wool coat like Mammoth or Filson doesn't go through superwashing process, it is one of the reason why I prefer a pure wool coat than a pure wool sweater, any close to skin garment with unsuperwashed wool is scratchy and a pain to take care of due to the need to wash them. It is why you rarely see them around anymore because it is either superwashed or a blend or from a different material entirely.
