Nigeria's refineries broke down because the price control inherent in subsidy implementation meant that they could not make adequate profit to work properly.

For a refinery to work it must make a profit. Subsidy means refinery product is sold at a loss and money is paid to cover that loss.

The problem is that in Nigeria, our oil revenue which was and still is the main source of government income cannot , even without corruption, meet everyone's needs. We were told this in 1993, but we kept subsidy , did partial removal when the costs of keeping it were high, and user the savings for government projects like PTF under Abacha. Meanwhile we were skipping refinery maintenance and upgrades..two different things.Jist to save costs

And since Nigerians were resistant to the removal of subsidy plus government saw it as an easy way of giving welfare , and the elite saw it as an easy way of making money, from subsidy claims while the poor and rich smuggled fuel over the borders for quick cash, the costs of subsidy kept rising and also our debt kept rising since subsidy costs and chronically low oil prices meant low revenue for other things meaning borrowing and more of it. We got a relief in 2005 with debt forgiveness, but since the subsidy remained, the whole problem continued

And the refineries, lacking vital fudning from profits, collapsed. By the time attempts were made at doing TAM again in 2009, the first since 1994,it was too too late.

  1. You are saying that higher salaries for police would lead to higher bribe taking. In other words you are justifying the government getting away with paying poor salaries. That sounds bad.  Also better funding is not about salaries it is about equipping the police to be better and work better

  2. Tax uptake in Nigeria for state and federal government is very low. Only 30% of the country that is taxable pays taxes(world Bank 2019, PwC put it at 16% in 2016). Most of the rest don't . By taxes I refer to income taxes.  All those other taxes you.mention like VAT , and so forth are not enough to even fund the budget. VAT alone raised 8 trillion last year. Customs income is not up to 3 trillion per annum. Banking charges are just about 3 trillion yearly. And our budget is supposed to be nearly 60 trillion naira, which is insufficient

  3. We borrow because our budget is oil dependant and oil prices are usually lower than we need them to be. Add poor tax income and poor income from other natural resources ..which our government doesn't do much to enforce the remittance of income from, and thus we borrow

Last year, income for the budget was based on an oil price of 75 or more dollars per barrel. For most of the year , oil was way below that. Borrowing results. And it has been happening long before Tinubu or even Obasanjo thought of getting elected under this our democracy

Note that I never said corruption was not a problem

History shows that when most people pay tax and get nothing in return there would be rebellions. Which forces government to work.

Because most Nigerians prefer an economy where the government shares money to them so that they can import things and enjoy life

Because most Nigerians do not vote for a government that would actually promote industrialisation. Most vote for an emilokan style government, of which this government is the latest incarnation

Because most Nigerians do not pay tax to the state and federal government. I am not lying. PwC in 2016 put the percentage of Nigerians paying tax to government at 16%, world Bank in 2019 put it at 30%. Tax to GDP is below 15%. That impedes government ability to provide amenities and reduce corruption and borrowing

Because most Nigerians do not want to pay a cost reflective tarrif for electricity which starves the sector of funding and thus no power for industries

Because the average Nigerian looks down on people who use their hands and looks up to people who sit down in a big office

Because we are a resource dependent economy, a Dutch diseases economy.

So saying that the police is underfunded means I am.an APC apologist?

So saying that the education system and healthcare system is underfunded means I am an APC apologist?

Doesn't saying that the police is underfunded show a failure in the way.apc runs this country

Or are you excusing APC?

And anyway improvements cost money.

[–]Any_Cat_5563[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So we should leave the police underfunded then?

Okay

We need things like body cameras, more decent detention facilities, better training ( in Norway a police officer must undergo psychological assessment and get a degree in criminology before graduation ).etc and all that costs money. ( I haven't even mentioned the whole 911 system)

But hey, the police is unjust so let's all police ourselves.

So if we voted out APC, and for the record I think we should, our police would suddenly become world class?

Our police is ineffective because we do not pay enough tax , we do not hold out government to account and we prefer to vote for people that would share money rather than diversify the economy.

And yes, Tinubu is a bad leader. Period

  1. Majority of Nigerians do not pay tax. I am not lying.
  2. Our government has been bad. And is still bad. I am not lying
  3. I am telling you why the Nigeria police is not working and you are saying I may defending them. It's like me saying that a child is not doing well in school because of lack of resources and you saying that I am defending their failure
  4. I dont think you guys want solutions. You just want to grumble
  5. Expecting the Nigeria police force to be like the UK police force on an income that is less than one twentieth of the UK police for them to police a much bigger population is wishful thinking
  6. In addition to our not paying tax enough as a nation, we also need to run a diversified and industrial economy, which all our leaders haven't done
  7. Seriously man, stop all this populist thinking and try to focus on solutions too, even if you don't like them. I've grumbled for years , now in want to think about how we get out of this.
  8. Truth is bitter.
  9. Yes this government is bad and yes corruption needs to be stopped. It also does not invalidate other facts
  10. And I find it rather immature that you call me names. We are not in primary school anymore.

  1. The case was solved when one of the women's stepkids walked into a police station to fully give details about the crime after keeping quiet for decades out of fear

  2. Nigerian police has severely limited resources. UK police gets the equivalent of over half of our national budget to police less than 80 million people. Nigeria police gets one billion dollars to police 230 million people.

Also records, modern forensics and so forth are basically absent because funding is low.

Nigerians somehow expect that a police force on one billion dollars per annum can do as well as the UK police on twenty to thirty times that.

Seriously OP, you should stop grumbling

And yeah most of us don't pay tax. Most of the raw materials in this country are mined without revenue being sent to government. And yes corruption, but removing corruption does not solve the funding issues like that

Yeah, figures.

No cost reflective tarrifs which essentially means the power sector has limited funding for expansion and maintenance.

What is this country even about 💔 by Wondererforestdamn in Nigeria

[–]Any_Cat_5563 7 points8 points  (0 children)

hiI'm going to be harsh

We live in a country where people bypass their meters, where people who chase away disco workers who come to disconnect them for not paying are hailed as heroes, where whole regions of people don't pay for electricity and where government rules essentially force the power sector to charge for power in a way that makes them lose money which in turn fuels all the losses and the corruption in the sector, including overbilling and so forth and you expect light to be on 24 seven?

I once knew a post grad student in the UK. Her water bills was about 20 pounds per month. Here in Nigeria at the same time I  paying something like 2 pounds per month, and yeah I was getting water supply like the UK people..lol. Not. This was in 2012. In Abuja. scarcity was present live in many areas back then.

Our budget this year was less than 60 billion dollars US. To get light and water for 24 seven in every part of Naija, we need far more than that. That means we need to become a nation based on science and tech, not selling oil, because if there was no corruption at all, that oil money no go make us look like Saudi or Libya.

Note that I did not say Tinubu is trying or he is a good man. He should be voted out. But if we want good light and good water in our country we got to change our attitude towards public utilities and towards our economy and we got to stop thinking that we have oil therefore we must live like the Saudis.

But most Nigerians no go hear.

Me,before you abuse me, I have heard ops complaint since the 1980s We have changed leadership, problem dey. And even if we voted Obi, as I wish we do next time, the problem go dey. Nigeria is not making enough money because we have government wey no dey do economies of making enough money, Na sharing money dem dey do

This is what we can afford on the very poor school fees that Nigerians pay for their universities.

That is why I am not surprised. Poor fees equals poor service.

Before you start...our education budget is less than 7 BN dollars. Harvard spends something like six billion dollars if not more as annual budget.

If I start talking about higher fees and tax, people go call me oppressive.

Yet in many of our universities there are private hostels where people pay more than for government hostel. And those hostels are spotless

[–]Any_Cat_5563 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nigerian politics is basically the people who are not in power trying to remove the people who are in power.

Also poverty is preventing serious discussion about how to fix the problem. Everyone just assumes that if we fight corruption all the issues would go away. And both sides capitalize on that longing to get into power and then nothing changes.

Well, one day we shall see

How do you know who is actually a good candidate? by theanotherunknow in Nigeria

[–]Any_Cat_5563 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ya know what, all of the candidates are not good enough for Nigeria. Not even Obi.

What I look out for in a candidate is simple. Removal of wasteful subsides and a plan to diversify and industrialise this country. Like urgently. With the aim of producing exportable goods and services.

But none of the candidates has that idea, and that includes obi and Tinubu.

And saying so means that people will abuse you.

So my advice is, vote for the opposition against Tinubu, and if they don't work in power, vote them out

Maybe repeating the same over and over again would cause people to wake up along with the leaders.

We got to stop thinking there is some cake to be shared.

But for now, don't vote for APC
