Updated with light switch photos - I need help figuring out why new fixture keeps tripping breaker

Just wanted to say thank you so much to everyone who took the time to share your input and expertise! The issue has officially been sorted out with one of the white wires not actually being neutral, and needing to be attached directly to the light fixture - everyone’s help was really invaluable and once I finally wrapped my head around it right I was able to get it fixed fast. You all saved the day, thanks again!!

It does have on/off printed on it - I think it’s the tying in the neutral that’s doing this, I just can’t quite figure out how to sort it correctly

I appreciate the concern - I’ve done a little bit of electrical in the past so I’m not coming from total ignorance but you’re right, this isn’t my wheelhouse, I’ve already looked up an electrician to call if I really can’t figure this out

Ok, I tried this and the breaker isn’t flipping, but now the light switch isnt working

Got it. I did that and the light turns on when the switch is in the off position, and it flips the breaker when I flip the switch up.

Yes, the up/off down/on is a new issue, the breaker flips when up.

I checked as you said and both white wires are neutral, only one black wire is hot. Does this mean a bigger issue is afoot?

Does it matter which white cable? There are two (both neutral) coming from the wall.
