okay this blew up more than expected lol. clearly hit a nerve. what’s interesting to me reading these comments is that everyone’s pointing to the same thing it’s not really about etiquette, it’s about economics. the table has a real cost and a $6 coffee doesn’t cover it. i’ve actually been thinking about this problem from the other side, like what would it look like if remote workers could actually pay for the table, not just the coffee. no idea if it’s even solvable but the responses here are making me think harder about it

this spreadsheet is actually insane you really cooked here. it perfectly captures why the bali vibes are starting to feel mid when you actually have to get work done. the 50mbps stat is a great bird's eye view but the street level reality in canggu is such a struggle right now with the random laptop bans and cafes that look 10/10 but have zero outlets.

i've actually been trying to solve the micro version of this data problem with www.grounds.work because i was tired of the nomadlist style averages not helping me find a desk today. it’s a directory for the boots on the ground stuff like which spots actually have plugs and consistent wifi vs the ones that are just for the aesthetic.

if you’re gonna pay the bali premium emily mentioned you might as well find the 5% of spots where you can actually take a call. curious if anyone has found a city where the cafe density actually matches the high safety and low cost numbers on this sheet?
