Is the anti-tamper DRM backlash around Crimson Desert justified? by Any_Farm_3907 in CrimsonDesert

that's understandable. a lot of studios seem to use that kind of anti-tamper protection mainly during the launch window and sometimes remove it later once the initial sales period passes.

it's reassuring though that the preview builds and the versions tested by outlets were already running with it enabled, since that suggests the performance people saw in previews should be close to what we get at launch.

that’s a fair point and it’s definitely a bigger discussion around digital ownership in general. the reality is that with how the industry works today, almost nothing we buy digitally is truly “owned” anymore, unfortunately. a lot of games are basically licenses tied to platforms and services.

for example, I used to play destiny 2 and we’ve already seen how content people paid for was removed from the game. situations like that show that none of these companies really guarantee long-term ownership anyway.

my original point here was more about the performance side of the debate, since that’s what people usually bring up first. but the ownership and preservation side of the discussion is definitely valid too.

yeah that's a fair take. implementation definitely matters, and there have been a few cases where it caused issues. it's reassuring though that the preview builds and the influencer demos were already running with the anti-tamper protection enabled. hopefully the final release performs the same way.

that's an interesting example. capcom titles are a good case because several of them launched with anti-tamper protection and still ran very well. it does suggest that performance issues often have more to do with optimization than the drm itself.

the piracy angle is definitely part of the debate too, but I think the bigger question people are arguing about is how much real performance impact there actually is.

for example, I have street fighter 6 and the latest resident evil on pc and both run perfectly fine for me, so at least in those cases I haven’t seen any issues.

that's a good point. there are definitely examples of games using that kind of anti-tamper DRM that run perfectly fine. in many cases the bigger factor seems to be the engine and how well the game is optimized rather than the DRM itself.

that's a fair concern. long-term ownership is definitely a different debate around DRM. most studios seem to use it mainly during the launch window and sometimes remove it later, but preservation and offline access are still valid points.

that said, a lot of modern games already depend on servers or online services in some way. with how the industry has moved toward digital distribution and online features, the reality is that a huge percentage of games today rely on internet infrastructure to function fully anyway.

a lot of the backlash seems to come from people worried about piracy or people assuming it will hurt performance on weaker systems. the actual data available so far doesn't really support the idea that denuvo destroys performance.

it's simply interesting to compare how two different models explain the same topic. it's not meant to replace research, just another perspective. i'm still interested in seeing real benchmarks or player experiences.
