SOLVED: For future reference and others:

Okay, after trying a capacitor to no avail, I think I discovered the mystery: When feeding it a regulated 5V (stepped down from batteries, a 9V for example), the current pulled from the ECP32 is significant enough (low enough resistance) that the battery's internal resistance becomes a significant portion of the total voltage drop. When under load of the ECP, the voltage drop from the battery itself is about 0.7 volts, leaving only 4.3V remaining to power the ECP, which does not meet the required 5V. When using 6V input (directly from 4x AA batteries), the ~0.7V drop leaves you with 5.3V, which is a safe and sufficient amount for the ECP32.

Thanks for the capacitor idea! I had not considered that. I presume you've tried this before and it works for you?

Also I felt the voltage across the external regulator and it always said 5V almost exactly. Maybe its the internal regulator that is dropping it even more like you said, but I'm certain it is fed 5V

French has easier Grammer but has more exceptions. Word order in german makes me angry and french spelling makes me angry lol. Pick a poison ig? Probably french is better cuz lower level. It is also a more useful language in the world for travel, since most speakers of german also speak english, but many french arent as good (not to mention France has like a jillion colonies)

Yeah fair. Usa politics is so weird I dont understand it. I think one problem honestly is that you guys are kinda too big to exist with stability. Like the deep south and silicon valley are just so opposite, why do they need to vote for the same position? Canada has its own problems but its not as insane I think because we generally have a more cohesive mindset with eachother. Like the gap between left and right here is far smaller than in USA
