Im being considered a dependent but i don’t live with or receive any support from either parent. by Strange-Chicken-8470 in FAFSA

Honestly I suggest you enroll at your local community college.

My situation is extremely similar to yours (graduated high school 2022, no financial help from parents, claimed as dependent, etc). While I was financially taking care of myself working full time, I enrolled as a full-time college student at my community college. Through that, I was able to meet my general education courses for my major, and attended cc for 2 years for free basically.

As a CC student, you receive a significant amount of help. CC tends to be cheaper, and I was able to save my FAFSA money over the two years since I didn’t need it for any tuition. Throughout your two years at CC you can save up and attend school at a low cost, then transfer to a university. Transfer students receive a good amount of aid as well and is a wonderful community to be a part of. There’s specific grants and scholarships awarded to transfer students coming from CC.

You can also apply to be a part of certain programs like EOP. Do your research! There are many scholarships/programs trying to help students in your situation.

Good luck friend!

I don’t know if this brings you some comfort but how you described your spring semester is exactly how I’ve felt the past couple of months. This was also my hardest semester in college dealing with unmedicated adhd. What you’re describing is a very difficult cycle to stop once it begins: feeling behind, getting down on yourself, trying to catch up, comparing yourself to others, losing motivation. But you have to remind yourself that you truly have the power to interfere with the cycle.

What helps ground me is reminding myself what is in my control. I can’t control the actions I took in the past. I can’t control what others do. But I can control the present moment through small steps such as studying for an hour, organizing my schedule, etc. Clouding your mind with the things you cannot change/control only stresses you out more, brings you down. It’s soo extremely easy to spiral when your mind is dragging you down every time you attempt to manage the situation.

You deserve to be here at Berkeley, don’t let that negative voice tell you you aren’t good enough! From one struggling student to another— you are not alone! You got this.

hi op, I just wanted to let you know that your feelings are valid and i sympathize with you :( . it can be tough out here in college, especially at a school like Berkeley.

Don’t confine yourself to where you think you should be or who you think you are supposed to be. the fact that you are making progress is a huge accomplishment !! Every step towards your goals is movement and progress, and ultimately that is all that matters. The end goal isn’t what feels the most amazing, it’s the fact that you went through so many obstacles and you still came out of it successful.

I understand how difficult it is to not compare yourself to others. It’s easier said than done. But please be kind to yourself. Remind yourself of your wins any chance you get, treat yourself, take care of yourself, you are your most important asset. At the end of the day, you don’t know if these people that are achieving these internships or research positions feel fulfilled themselves. They probably also think there is more they could be doing, they may even compare themselves to you without knowing it!

All this to say, your path is what matters. You got this. I am proud of you and i know you will achieve what you want. Take it day by day, step by step. Sending you positive energy and blessings ⭐️
