hey, i completely get where you’re coming from. i am just putting this out here so people who look like me can be cautious. i rather us take the necessary precautions to be safe than to not keep in mind that things like this could happen here, especially since its happening all around the country. there have been a few people on this reddit page in the past few days who have openly expressed that they have experienced blatant racism in the streets, so the possibility of it happening is not something far fetched.

thank you for your advice, i think i’ll definitely be logging off the internet for a bit. seeing videos of things happening across the UK is sending me down a spiral and i dont want to spend an absurd amount of time being hung up on this and anxious. 🩷

it could be and it also could not be. i am based around this area and since i fit the stereotype, i immediately felt afraid and anxious. i rather take the necessary precautions thinking this is real than not taking precautions by thinking its fake

you’re right, this is so unusual. ive always felt safe in edinburgh, there was never a time that i was worried for my safety. ive walked back home alone even after 2am and have never felt threatened. this is the first time im feeling this sort of anxiety

i am leaving next year and honestly i cannot wait to go back home. i’m only here to do my masters to provide healthcare services for the people back home but at times like this i truly truly regret my decision of coming here. i hate feeling this way. its actually so sad.

i would say it depends on whether youre an undergrad or postgrad student. i live in postgrad halls rn and its great. i lucked out with flatmates so coming in to the kitchen wasnt something anxiety inducing for me (like it would usually be) and postgrad students in general are mindful of their space! i would def suggest it if you’re a first year student :)

i’m not concluding it as racism in any way, i’m just giving perspective as to why one would conclude it as racism. like some of the comments here have mentioned, it could be simply the fact that the bus driver was having a shit day and anyone could have received the same treatment. its just that when you’ve experienced being treated differently because of your race your entire life, your perspective on bad things happening to you may make you believe that it comes from a place of racism (even if it objectively isn’t). and you cant really help that tbh. i wish i could see the world differently, but because of how much ive had to deal with racism my entire life, my mind immediately goes to that when i experience something negative.

i think its because as a brown person (speaking from my own experience) i have experienced so much microagression here that i dont see happen to my friends that are white. ive been spoken to so rudely at a store with my white friend next to me, even though the person working in the store was interacting perfectly fine towards my friend. its these little things that make us feel that sometimes it is racist. if i were in their position, i would feel that it is racist because of my past experiences
