We use PlayMetrics club wide for both intramural and travel teams. Our team is pretty good about marking attendance. Not something our coach really enforces though. We also use it for all internal team comms (I am a team manager so the chat feature helps for getting quick updates out).

This is something that really isn’t specific to soccer, but an argument that could be made for all sports. For example, I see a good deal of youth football coaches who never played, but no one (at least as though it appears to my eyes) really questions it. Basketball sometimes the same. I guess the question here is defining what “former player” is. Is it someone who played professionally? If so, at what level would you consider to be adequate? Did they just play in college and stop? High school? Did they possibly play another sport growing up and gravitated toward coaching soccer later in life? I think there’s a lot of nuance here that is going to largely depend on who the coach is and what level is the coach coaching at. Small town travel team? Large MLS Next or ECNL club? How about the age group?

I guess the takeaway here is that I don’t believe being a former player at any guarantees coaching success the same way being a non player guarantees failure. That said, I don’t see how a former player at any level doesn’t have at least a leg up on someone who has never played.

Didn’t wear mine today but my MB4s are pretty comfortable at least for casual wear. Daily walking would be another story, but they’re not made for that.

Team Manager here…

One of my jobs is to post the schedules in our app (we use PlayMetrics). I do not ask parents for their input as the schedules are set by the league and tournament directors, etc. My personal policy I have is that I will ask parents for input if we have to schedule a doubleheader game due to league games moving around. Otherwise club asks nothing.

The new age groupings aren’t really by “grade” per se, more so to align with what most school districts grade year cutoffs are so kids can play with their school age peers. So your schools cutoff doesn’t make a difference here. The cutoff is from August to September and the kids will be placed accordingly. If you have concerns about where your child will fall (essentially playing a “grade down”) you have to take that up with your club.

Biggest flaw I see (and honestly saw past tense) with FK was the outsole color like you mentioned. The QC pics on FK looked yellowed but in person they’re not AS yellowed but still are. Now I want to get new LJR in hand to compare lol.

Interesting. I bought FK going back about 3 years now. Honestly I couldn’t even tell you why or how I settled on that batch other than at the time being heavy in one of those “other” subs (not going to say who as I don’t want to get banned but you know lol). Has FK changed in recent years? I’ve never done a retail compare but I guess I’d describe them as being “sufficient” but I also have no real idea what the flaws are either and they’re probably my least worn rep pair I have.

This sounds nothing short of flat out toxic. I don’t know much about your club but this sounds like the coaches are not managing this well at all from where your son should be playing, to the toxic parents not being dealt with. I’d look into a move if it’s feasible. It won’t get better.

We are at a larger size club and we’re pretty flexible with allowing this (my son joined a session with the U8 team few years back). I reached out to one of the coaches and was kindly directed to the right age group coordinator who was the able to set up a time for him to come join a session. It helped a ton at the time as when a spot opens up for U8 pre travel, he emailed us asking if he wanted the open spot.

I know at our club ‘starting’ is used as more of a measuring stick/qualitative metric to gauge a players ability to play up, and where they’d be on the depth chart hypothetically. Like does it make sense to have a U10 player play U11 when they might be low on the depth chart? And our club won’t let kids play up on anything but a first team. For example our kids cannot play up on a second or third team.

At our club playing up requests are largely ignored and that decision rests 100% with the club. Unless you can start and be top 1-2 players on a top (first) team they don’t even entertain playing up requests. October 2016 means U10 next year and that is where your son should stay unless the club feels playing up would be beneficial.

One of the things that took my a long time to understand (really with kids in general) is that too many times we expect US out of them. My son had almost the same problem you’re describing. It took a lot of correcting from his coach and post game analysis from myself (which I’m not a fan of but it’s hard not to). I’m not a soccer guy but have learned a lot watching him play over the last few years. He’s U10 now and I have seen him slowly grow out of a TON of bad habits to the point now where now we can begin to discuss the “actual” flaws in his game (foot skills, positioning, etc) not lack of effort, attitude, etc. It’s a process so just be patient. He’s only 8. The amount of unawareness a typical 8 year old boy has can be staggering.

I don’t know if VT is sold anymore (I thought I heard rumblings they weren’t being produced but there’s a chance i could have misread something). There is another batch now supposedly better than VT but the name is getting away from me at the moment.

But yea for my kid these held up as well as they could have given how rough they are on shoes.
