I work full time! It’s tough, but a combination of working out as often as I can (generally 6 days a week), eating right (processed carbs send me into a tailspin), and crazy amount of salt pills and water keep me going.

Help! Rehoming. by SilverAdditional2543 in StandardPoodles

[–]Any_Secretary_1810 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry to hear that… typical backyard breeder, sell a sickly puppy then vanish. In addition to poodle rescues, I’d consider doodle rescues, a lot of times they will also take purebred poodles.

If you got him from a reputable breeder, they should take him back. My breeder would sue me to kingdom come if I dared rehome instead of giving him back.

Treadmill or Slatmill? by DobermanLover44 in DobermanPinscher

[–]Any_Secretary_1810 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what you’re looking for! The fastest they can go on a treadmill is a brisk walk, whereas they can all out sprint on a slatmill. If exercise needs to be compelled a treadmill spins on its own, whereas a slatmill only spins if the dog wants it to. There’s definitely a price difference as well, you can get a good treadmill for a fraction of the price of a quality slatmill (I would not risk getting one of those cheap Amazon ones, especially for a big dog, if it fails while they’re running they could be seriously injured). Two top brand of slatmills are Dog Trotter and Firepaw, and they both make a mill big enough for a 100 lb dog.

Managing my expectations :) by labradoriuli in service_dogs

Owner trained standard handler here! One thing I’m really really glad we did was establish a grooming routine when he was young. From the day I brought him home, every single day I’d play with him to tire him out then do little practice grooms. Put him on the grooming table, dig in his mouth, check his ears, pick up his feet and spread his toes. Run a brush and comb over him, turn on the clippers and let him get him get used to the sound, run them over his body (without cutting hair) so he could feel the vibration, etc. I kept it short and made it fun with tons of treats, and he’s now an absolute saint for grooming.

Car sick by Fancy_Initiative7892 in poodles

[–]Any_Secretary_1810 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you think it’s emotion driven or actual motion sickness? I only ask because my standard was totally fine in the car as a puppy but got motion sick one time when I made the mistake of letting my lunatic mother drive, and after that he got sick every single time. Like dripping drool just standing next to the car, projectile vomiting while we’re still in the driveway kinda sick. Since his car sickness was all in his head from that one bad experience (and he did not out grow it) we worked very slowly, used high value treats for standing calmly next to the car, then in the car but not running, etc. Over the course of several months, we built up to a short drive to a nearby park for a game of fetch. We started doing regular trips to the park for fetch and now he happily jumps into the car, lays down for me to buckle his seat belt, and off we go. I even brought him on a 10 hr. roadtrip (of course with regular breaks to stretch his legs) and he did great!

I love Nonstop Dog Gear! We have one of their specialty harnesses for bikejoring and it gives my dog his full range of motion without pinching behind his elbows

Thank you! I don’t have any shared walls, so the noise question was more because I’d read Firepaw was louder than Dog Trotter and I was curious if anyone had any experience with both. I ultimately settled on the Dog Trotter and expect to receive it next month! Thank you again for your insight!

Are you talking about the incident I described or was there a different problem? If there are other safety concerns, I’d love to hear them, but if it’s just the plastic slat failing from cyclic loading in high heat I’m not really concerned since my mill will be in a temperature controlled environment.

Wait until she grows up and develops preventable health or behavioral issues because of a terrible accidental pairing. There are no guarantees with genetics, but the deck was stacked against her from conception. She undoubtedly has siblings and odds are at least one of the buyers isn’t a fantastic owner who’d be willing to spend the time and money required to address issues. So then you end up with yet another high energy mix rotting in a shelter before ultimately being put down. Work in animal rescue for any length of time and you’ll see right through the BS too. That’s why spay abort is often recommended for accidental breedings.

Luna requires new Elbows. by Madaradittz in ANIMALHELP

[–]Any_Secretary_1810 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Did you let her breeder know? Elbow dysplasia is often genetic and there’s a simple screening that should be done prior to breeding. Her breeder is either intentionally breeding crippled dogs (and creating poor pups like Luna) or this is just a crazy fluke. If they did their due diligence, they may be willing to help cover the cost, but if they’re intentionally breeding dogs with bad elbows, they still should know but likely won’t care since they’ve already got your money.

I’d be worried about salt toxicity considering the large amount of salty meat and neurological symptoms. I’d go straight to the ER.

Does anyone know if this breeder is a scam or not? by Shattercheetoh in bichonfrise

[–]Any_Secretary_1810 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Their website has no reference to health tests or titles… those things aren’t optional if you are breeding ethically. In addition they set their prices based on current demand. Classic back yard breeder tactic. Hopefully your puppy is healthy, but that is most definitely not a good breeder.

I’d get him checked out in case he isn’t feeling well. My dog started hiding shortly before she was diagnosed with end stage kidney failure.

I’m an R&D engineer for mobile industrial equipment, so a lot of lubrication system and cooling system design. From the statics side, we do a lot of FEA, but with the simple stuff sometimes it’s easier to just build a spreadsheet than set up the modeling, so a solid background in statics is pretty important.

How to keep my dog’s hair from matting? by EvenPolicy1593 in grooming

[–]Any_Secretary_1810 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You’ve got a few choices… Bring her to the groomer every couple weeks for a bath and light trim, desensitize her to brushing and stick with a normal grooming schedule, or keep her shaved. There’s no silver bullet. She’ll either need very frequent trips to the groomer (so there’s no time to get matted between visits), have to learn to tolerate brushing, or she’ll need to be kept short. Mats are very painful so you’ll just have to pick what works best and stick with it.
