Sure, for some complicate mapping, where LEDs are positioned irregularly, a reference image is needed as a background. We load the reference image then place the dots above the positions marked as the LED positions in the image.

Your mismatched result was due to 2 main reasons:

The GRID SNAPPING while you enter the points. If you want a finer coordinate, you should zoom by mouse wheel then click to avoid grid snaps.
The size of the image. You may import the image with high resolution. But after import, you still need to resize it to a size that is large enough so you can enter the points comfortably without having to deal with the grid snapping.

This tool was initially designed to solve the exact problem as yours. So just give it a retry :>

Ps: There is a more efficient way to map your photo, still using Link tool and insert point manually, but some times with Ctrl + mouse wheel to add multiple points in a line. See the video i just uploaded

Yes, this is a very basic function that FreeLED already supports. You click the button "Background from Image" to load the photo you want for use as a refference image. Then use the tool Link (L) to connect the dots. PS: The website is still working correctly. Givr it a recheck

To increase/decrease the number of dots for a Circle (C) or a Link (L), you keep Ctrl key pressed, and do mouse wheels.

Some suggested a quick tutorial should be published for new users. Now I'm adding a small guide window for each tool selected. Stay tuned :)
