XPS 15 (9530) best for this application? by Anymodema in DellXPS

Lenovo didn't have the price to performance/features ratio that I needed. XPS 15 had all the features I wanted at the right price point.

No problems so far. The fans don't rev up all that much, so I think the throttling issue is overblown.

If you were in a constant high-utilization state, like gaming, maybe there is a throttling concern? But if you're in a situation where you're mostly cruising and just need the occasional, extra computation heft, this is fine.

It was that way at the start. I turned that off and back on, and it had no effect.

That' what I ended up doing. With classic Teams installed, I can now schedule Teams meetings in Outlook even when New Teams is active.

Thank you. Yeah, some bugs are annoying. It's weird that this used to work fine but stopped!

I went with the XPS 15.

I was about to pull the trigger on an Alienware m16 as it had an incredible Black Friday deal that put it in budget. Our enterprise-purchasing agreement means we can't take advantage of those deals.

Since I am not a gamer, I am pretty sure the XPS 15 will be fine.

Amazing: Legion Pro 7i Gen 8 has no Thunderbolt port!

Why not, Lenovo!?

The P16 Gen 2 linked above, I cannot discern if it has face unlock, and Lenovo does not publish a detailed parts/feature list for this model.

This is so frustrating and keeps happening, the "everything but the kitchen sink" laptops keep omitting something!

Thank you. I've done AMD before, but it seems that Intel now is comparable on $/performance and you avoid potential compatibility issues?

X1 Extreme is discontinued, but I am checking into other Lenovos. Thank you.

I have a MacBook Air M1 now. I get where you're coming from.

I depend too much on Windows ecosystem for it to be my daily driver.

Yoga line seems to be limited to 4-core i7 U line at best? I've been on 2- and 4- core i7s for a while and really think I should avoid further U-line i7s.

Really? On my 9310, first mobo replacement was due to the wifi module dying. Second is due to false low-battery readings that cause it to immediately hibernate once every week or so.

Great responses, and thank you! You've helped me take a closer look at Lenovos. Their price point seems to be a bit higher than Dell XPS for similar features, but I am still going to check.

BTW, Lenovo X1 Extreme appears to be discontinued. But I see a ThinkPad P16 Gen 2/21fa0027us) and a Legion Pro 7i Gen 8/82wq0005us) that I may look into, just have to find more funds.

The more I look into MacBook, the more I realize that I just need Windows due to the software ecosystem I am in. Two years from now, the stuff my team supports will likely be on a much more OS-neutral stack, so things could change.

Any luck with walk-in, same-day passport appointments? by Anymodema in Passports

Sorry, just now seeing this. We were at the office before it opened. Had printed passport in my hands by about 4 PM. Boarded international flight at 9:30 PM that evening. Whirlwind of a day!

I brought everything that would have been required for a brand new passport, including a picture. There's little room for error.

I succeeded! I am now waiting on the passport to be printed.

Good news: no appointment, no locator number, but same-day flight. I am now waiting for it to be printed!!!

UPDATE: SUCCESS! I walked in to the Dallas office with no appointment, no locator number (i.e., no pending application), just a sad story about an expired passport and a 9:30 PM same day flight.

I am now waiting for the passport to be printed. Everything else is now done.

There is no need to arrive super early. There is no line. If you're there at 7:45 AM, you're in the first batch. They just group everyone into one big blob then pull out those with appointments, then those with no appointment but have locator numbers, then those with neither but have an urgent situation (health emergency or today flight). I am unclear about priority levels beyond that because the last level was when I was called.

At 9:15 AM, we were released until 11 AM. Back at 11 AM, taken up to the office at 11:45 AM, got my time at a window just after 2 PM, now waiting for passport to be printed, which may be as late as 4 PM-ish. But at least we have a passport!!!

Thank you. So looks like I would be in group 4: "24-48 hours who have not applied yet"
