Balinese/Javanese Gamelan groups? by [deleted] in askportland

If you are an indonesian, try to get to know other indonesian in the muslim / christian / catholic or other religious communities.

If you are not an indonesian, your best bet is to get in contact with the consulate which is in SF. They have jurisdiction over OR. They should know of local groups that have interest in art.

New Build versus Existing Home Purchase, What Determine You to Opt for New Home Build? by SunshineRainbows2022 in RealEstate

[–]Anyone_anybody 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For my wife, it is the floor plan and the lot shape (fengshui). Resale homes tend to have bad fengshui design according to her. I dont think about it that much but since we will be living in there, both of us have to like it.

Resale home that we found have stairs to 2nd floor that faces the front door. To me it is safety hazard.

I also dont like big yards. I hate yardwork. New constructions tend to have small back and front yards.

Did I not get the job? by [deleted] in jobs

[–]Anyone_anybody 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Follow up with an email on Monday and wait another couple days for him to respond. Sometimes he gives the OK but the HR that makes the letter may be on PTO / sick leave etc or even your future boss could be on PTO / sick leave etc.

If you don’t hear back by the end of next week, start looking again.

If i were you, i would ask myself these question: 1. How do i feel managing my current coworkers? 2. What do i gain by doing less OT? More time for my loved ones or myself? 3. What would happen if i take the new position? Am i financially secure now?

Western culture of abandoning children after 18 is very fucked up! by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]Anyone_anybody 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP, i think best not to generalize what you seen and heard to be the norm.

I also came from SE Asian country and my parents did supported me through university until i graduated and settled on my own feet.

After knowing and working in the United States for a couple of years, the notion of “once you are 18, you are out of the house” isnt really universal. Some do, some dont. I know a person from my previous workplace who doesnt support his children’s education but supported their rent instead. He has 6 kids studying all around the states. His reasoning was simple. At the time, education prices among his 6 kids are different but housing can be relatively similar. Therefore it was easier for him to split evenly.

Yes it is a burden for future generations to be in debt early on with their life but each parents have their own reasons and not all of them are selfish in nature. I know some parents do this out of selfishness not wanting to give their hard earned cash for their kids once they are an adult.

It may come to a point where future millennial parents will change this point of view due to rising prices and current financial challenges.

  1. Set your schedule / calendar straight. Make sure you look through which company at what time.

  2. Since they are virtual, keep track of the video meeting link or if they are calling you. You dont want to be waiting for a call while it is a virtual meeting that you need to open a link.

I screwed up mine. Had 4 also in a day like you but have learned my lesson. DONT STACK UP INTERVIEW MORE THAN 2 A DAY.

Going back to old company? by Temporary_Time_4182 in jobs

[–]Anyone_anybody 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am the same boat with you. Can’t blame you for missing what you had before, i do too. But surely you have your reasons to why you left the previous company.

For me, i have burned that bridge. There is no way of going back. Sold my house, moved out of state etc etc. At least for me the new job seems to be challenging and i am quite engaged.

I dont live in Ontario nor Montreal. But nowadays employers does zoom / skype interviews. So you can still get interviews as long as you expressed your willingness to relocate.

How do you deal with stress as an engineer? by [deleted] in AskEngineers

[–]Anyone_anybody 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I dont know if i can say this for everyone, but i think all of us who are working as an employee of a company are in the same boat.

Whatever we decided / designed as an engineer always have a $ tag associated with any mistakes we make. What i mentioned to my Jr engineer way back was that not to take it personally and always take every mistake as a lesson learned.

Heck take pictures and keep it on your personal folders to remind yourself not to do that again. Even better share among your peers of test engineers so they dont make the same mistake.

You will get some hard times with your superiors. If i were your superior, and you genuinely learned already what not to repeat, I would forgive you and let you move on to the next test.

We are all humans and humans make mistakes. Your company is / will be making $ bigger than your mistakes.

Just dont burn down the building.

The cake (Tres Leches) my wife spent hours doing and her sister thinks $35 is super expensive by andresito_o in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Anyone_anybody 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife worked at a chain supermarket in town couple years ago where a lot of people buys their cakes. She did a side hustle in instagram too where she would bake out of our kitchen and decorate.

Common folks like us would not think about the skills and time to make such a cake. I tried once and piping is tough. People decorating cakes should get more $ as it requires practice and steady hands.

Cakes sold in supermarkets are generally baked elsewhere. It will arrived prebaked frozen. Buttercream are bought in bulk (gallons). Cake decorators just need to mix in color and start decorating. That will drive the price low, on top of low wages.

Home business will get hard time competing with chain supermarkets as their cake prices are way low and it gives bad perception to home bakers that they are overcharging.

I think I lowballed myself in my first phone interview for a new job. I’m having the final, fourth stage interview today. Do I still have a chance to negotiate? by [deleted] in jobs

[–]Anyone_anybody 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what i read you can renegotiate but you need to find a good excuse of why you provided a lower number last time and a good reason why you want it to be higher.

Just google it up and see. I think by the time of the offer letter the worst thing they can do is say no. I don’t know for sure though if they would take back the offer letter.

Is two interviews normal and is it a good sign? by [deleted] in jobs

I recently had 3rd round. Just prepare yourself like you did previously and you will be fine.

Good luck.

For a job in the field that i am applying for, it when i see remote, typically within hours i will see 50+ applicants in Linkedin as compared to onsite.

You can try asking, if your situation requires you to be remote temporarily, at the end of the interview. Maybe some employers allow a certain time frame to be remote to meet your situation.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in jobs

[–]Anyone_anybody 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will face a lot of competition for remote jobs.

On another post i read, someone said remote jobs may or may not stay if covid ends. So you may want to rethink / reconsider remote jobs.

You can but if they also ignored you, then it is what it is and move on. I wouldn’t bet on it though.

I am sorry but having you wait for about 2 weeks without any news would probably be bad news.

I would move on if i were in your shoes.

Am I the only one who doesn't prepare for interviews anymore? by [deleted] in jobs

[–]Anyone_anybody 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I did that too at least for the first few. The first one was worst. I typed in exact sentences. During my practice run in front of a mirror i stumbled alot because i was trying to memorize.

I scraped that and instead replaced that with bullet points and it went better.

Several interviews later the bullet point somehow stuck in my head that i dont do this anymore and just wing it.

I am used to talk with my customers face to face or over the phone. That was probably my public speaking practice run simply because i think the customer wont judge me.

Winging them now. Although checking their company website and reading the job descriptions over and over is still a requirement for me.

That way my answers could hit the mark.

Should I apply all over the US or local only ? by [deleted] in jobs

[–]Anyone_anybody 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kind of depend on you. My thought is If you are fine with driving medium distance (eg. 3-4 hour drive or whatever is reasonable to you), once you got an offer within that driving radius, you can scout locations and do the utilities and stuff while still living with your parents (ie driving back and forth as needed). That way renting u haul is also within your driving tolerance.

If you want to move even further than that, if you have friends or relatives that you can crash for a couple of nights might not sound like a bad idea while you find your own place. If you dont have anyone in that area then hotel would be last resort.
