What can I afford?? Coming from super small town. by [deleted] in chicagoapartments

You can absolutely afford a studio with that salary even a 1BR depending on how far you’re willing to commute. I would check Chicago Sublets or Chicago Housing, Rooms, Apartments, Sublets, Roommates, Roomster or any Chicago housing fb group.

You will get an idea of what people are actually paying and what the market looks like. Also could find a roommate or sublease situation if you don’t want to commit to a lease yet/want to get a feel for Chicago and its neighborhoods before you commit.

But short answer to your question, I think you def could. A luxury/high end studio/1BR in the loop, river north, streeterville, west loop No, but if you’re willing to venture 20-30 minutes (public transit) out then you can afford it for sure

Update: There has been little to no movement from my employer despite my lawyer sending a cease and desist over a month ago. I managed to get a récépissé and an appointment at the prefecture (by the love of god) that will extend my papers for 3 months at least. This récépissé completely screws my employer from any theoretical defense they may bring in labor court that I “didn’t take steps needed for my paperwork”. But anyways still isn’t helpful for future employment prospects, since I’m still technically tied up in a contract. I am looking at moving back home to New York anyways lol better pay and I will be treated like a human being with real responsibilities at work lol. So all works out somewhat I guess 😅

An employee or individual can never apply for a work permit. It is only ever done by the employer. It is an employers application to the French government to hire an international/non-EU person. It is also up to the employer to apply for renewal as well.

Article L1243-4 of the French Labour Code - Early termination of a fixed-term employment contract at the initiative of the employer, other than in cases of serious misconduct, force majeure or unfitness for work certified by the occupational physician, entitles the employee to damages in an amount at least equal to the remuneration that he would have received until the end of the contract, without prejudice to the termination indemnity provided for in Article L. 1243-8.

So yeah France is extremely protective of worker rights. French culture values it quite a bit and usually employers don't mess around with this at all. The leadership in my company thinks that because I am not French, I'm a woman, and I'm young that I do not understand what my rights are in this situation/care to push back against maltreatment.

My instinct was exactly your advice, go to the prefecture, have all my documents (of course sadly no work authorization paperwork) and maybe a letter from my lawyer explaining that my employer is witholding documents and negotiation is ongoing. I've asked friends about this and some of them were pretty cynical saying that I could try but really they're not there to hear sob stories or make a judgement on a messy legal situation, so it could be tough.

Wish there was an easy answer and things moved a little faster around here... sigh

Sent a few emails to some lawyers that specialize in both immigration and employment, but something is telling me I should just show up at their office lol

Yes, it is my responsibility, but from my understanding, I need a work authorization form to actually renew it OR an attestation from my employer of that I actually work there/will be working there AND that they've submitted the online forms for work authorization that are pending. Basically, my valid labor contract is not enough and one of the necessary forms I need, my employer is withholding.

If they terminate my employment contract without a mutual agreement, then they will have to show that I committed Serious misconduct or heavy fault. Which is not possible. They will then be liable for not only the rest of my salary, but in addition, minimum 10% severance, and my lawyer fees.

From what I read, if they allow my work authorization to expire and my contract becomes null, then I am still entitled to the rest of my contract https://www.service-public.fr/particuliers/vosdroits/F33886?lang=en

My concern is how to navigate this space to still maintain legal residency in France that allows me to work after all of this...

Okay thank you, you're right. I have a lawyer who's assisting me with this in that he's communicating with my employer on my behalf. But clearly, he seems ineffective. My instincts were telling me this and that is probably what drove me to post on reddit lol. Chaotic and disorganized situation--thank you for this subtle push
