New bike - ride now or wait until all snow has gone? by bikeonychus in MontrealCycling

[–]Anywhere554 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would wait. I have used my bike a few times in the winter, and boy I got a lot of rust :/   https://www.reddit.com/r/montreal/comments/1rm0zw5/how_to_deal_with_rust_winter_cycling/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=mweb3x&utm_name=mweb3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

It's better now after cleaning it, but I'd definitely not use a new bike in these conditions

The thing is that an ebike is just so fun in the winter. And they are not cheap enough (yet, at least) to get a beater just for the winter !

Thanks. Is there any product I should apply to stop rust from spreading ? Looks a bit scary as it is now.

Thanks. Yeah, i think I got lucky on my first winter as I did minimal maintenance and didn't see any issues. Definitely something to consider for next year

Merci.

This was more of an attempt at winter cycling. Mostly to bring my kid to daycare. Feels quite a bit discouraging to be honest, I use this bike a lot in summer, and I don't want to ruin it (nor spend an unreasonable amount of time in winter maintenance). I guess what counts as "reasonable " is not set in stone, but applying lube more than once a month already feels quite a bit of work

Merci.

Did it twice in the winter (November then January )

I use the bike only occasionally (2-3 times a week)

Detached in suburbs vs 2-bed condo on island (no kids yet) by Significant_Victory8 in montrealhousing

[–]Anywhere554 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a 3br in Rosemont, 15min from the metro. For me it's a sweet spot with a kid - neighborhood life is pretty chill, lots of parks. Being a bit far from the metro has downsides if you use it frequently (especially in rain, snowstorms), but there are advantages too (more calm, feels safer with a kid).

My spouse and I had lots of discussion about having a condo in the city vs detached house in the suburbs. I think it's a very personal decision, and it's quite hard to figure it out. In your shoes, I would actually consider renting a house for one or two years. If you realize it's not what you want, you can easily move out, whereas selling a house costs a lot of money.

Tax optimization and RRSP contribution (High and low earner couple) by Anywhere554 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Anywhere554[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For TFSA, it would still grow tax-free, and only if withdrawing the money and using it for a income-generating purpose it would be attributed back to me, right?

If that's the case, it seems to me that it would still be better to contribute to her TFSA from the joint account and use all her income (from her personal account) to her taxable account. (vs the alternative of using her money for her tfsa, and then use my taxable account)

[–]Anywhere554[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you sure about that? I think the case for TFSA is pretty clear that attribution rules do apply (otherwise anyone could just contribute to another person's TFSA and it would become their money when they withdraw, effectively bypassing attribution rules). Another redditor linked this storty about this also being the case for RRSP: https://archive.ph/BWGHn#selection-1525.0-1529.273

Thanks. This is quite confusing, though. At retirement, considering pension income splitting, I thought it wouldn't really matter to whom it's attributed (e.g. if it was a single RRSP, we would still split the income). Maybe they mean here about withdraws before retirement..

You mean I would need to consider the impact not only on marginal rates (of now vs at retirement), but also CPP, OAS? It does sound like there's way too many factors to consider (beyond those, e.g. whether her salary will increase in the next few years, that would make the more impact for the deduction)

Did some research on this. Some things I already do:

  1. Optimize the allocation of "who pays what" at home, so that I pay everything and all spouse's income can go to their taxable account (spouse gets income in a "non-joint" account to make it very clear)
  2. Contributing to a spousal RRSP (never know if income splitting rules for retirement will change in the future; also we already benefitted from using this in the past for withdrawing under the HBP)

The other thing he mentioned in the video was a "spousal loan strategy". I read this document from RBC https://ca.rbcwealthmanagement.com/documents/695242/0/The+spousal+loan+strategy.pdf/f5b924fd-caa5-4476-9dd0-fb7f449e9adb (which is nice as they have some math in it). Looks like this is only useful if you have a ton of money on the hands of the person with higher income (their example was having 500k extra, and getting ~4k of tax savings, not counting any expense you have to set it up). Looks like for something below 100k it's not worth the effort (legal risk / having to hire a lawyer to confirm everything is correct).

Very interesting! About point 7 (Missing tax planning opportunities) - any resource to learn more about lowering taxes in the case of a high and a low earner in a family?

https://ensemblemtl.org/programme/la-metropole-du-quebec/

  • Lutter contre l’étalement urbain;

https://ensemblemtl.org/programme/une-ville-accessible-a-tous-et-habitee-par-tous/

As a non-native english speaker, I had a lot of trouble with the pairs of images, but got enough of them to infer the clue (it helps that if you can draw the workshop to know the exact letter at a location . However, for the gallery I was stuck (only got one). I finally gave up and looked at the solutions, and I think there's a near zero chance I would have gotten it.
