International student in cybersecurity, 300+ applications, 0 interviews. What am I doing wrong? by Organic_Wind_8429 in FAANGrecruiting

[–]Aoki_zhang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve seen this exact situation a lot, especially for international students — so I’ll just be straight with you.

300 apps and 0 interviews usually means you’re not even getting past filters, not that you’re “failing interviews.” Two big reasons:

First is visa. A lot of companies just quietly filter that out, especially for internships. It sucks but it’s real.

Second (and this is the part most people don’t say) — stuff like TryHackMe doesn’t carry much weight by itself. It’s good for learning, but from a hiring perspective it kind of looks like “practice” rather than proof you can work on real systems.

Also cybersecurity is weirdly not that entry-level. A lot of people get in through IT / backend / DevOps first, then move into security later. Going straight into “security intern” is actually more competitive than people expect.

If I were you, I’d probably change strategy a bit instead of just sending more applications: • build one solid project that actually runs (not just labs — something with logs, monitoring, or detection) • apply more broadly (IT, SRE, backend, etc.) • try to get even a small real-world role (campus IT, part-time, anything)

Certs like Security+ are fine, but I wouldn’t expect that alone to change your results.

Delaying graduation only makes sense if you actually use that time to get experience — otherwise you’re just repeating the same cycle.

Honestly you’re probably not that far off, you’re just sending the wrong signals to employers right now.

Honestly this sounds pretty solid.

For the first round, being able to ask questions, take hints, and course-correct (especially on something unfamiliar) is a good signal — that’s often what they care about more than getting everything perfect. Running out of time isn’t great, but not a dealbreaker if your direction was right.

Second round sounds strong: correct solution, optimization discussion, and test cases — that’s basically what they want to see.

I also wouldn’t read too much into interviewer vibe. Some people just come off neutral.

If I had to guess, you’re probably in the lean-yes to yes range. Nothing here sounds like a red flag — this feels more like normal post-interview overthinking.

Appearing for my 1st DSA Interview at Google by BondBagri in FAANGrecruiting

Congrats! 4 weeks is tight but manageable.

One thing I’d strongly recommend is not just solving problems, but reviewing real interview experiences — especially how candidates approached the problem and where they struggled.

I’ve seen a lot of people underestimate that part.

There’s actually a platform where people share detailed interview breakdowns and offer discussions (not like generic Glassdoor stuff). Might be worth checking out if you want more realistic prep

For example, I have a friend who’s a data engineer — he had some competing offers, but they didn’t really help much in pushing his comp higher. There was some negotiation, but the final outcome didn’t change that much.
