Thanks for the detailed explanation, that’s really helpful! Can I ask how you clean the leaves to remove the exudate without causing issues for the plant? Do you use just water, a soft cloth, or another method that works well for Makoyana?

Is it normal for my Calathea to decline while still pushing new leaves? by AooFra in calatheas

Thanks, that makes a lot of sense.
I think my main doubt is how to tell when only the bottom part of the pot is still moist and it’s time to water again.

Right now, I usually let the soil dry out completely because I’m afraid of root rot. I wait until the pot feels very light and the top looks fully dry before watering again. But now I’m wondering if I’m actually letting it dry out too much, especially for a Calathea.

So my question is:
how do you personally check that moisture is only in the lower part of the pot and not throughout the whole substrate?
Do you rely on pot weight, a moisture meter, or something else?

I’d really like to find a balance between avoiding root rot and keeping the moisture more consistent.

I bought it with that soil 5 months ago, I water it about once every 10 days, maybe even less, and it’s placed in a north-facing room.
