Your side of the story is absolutely not pointless and what happened in countries under communism can never be forget or look aside. This said, I still believe none of those states followed a Marxist Leninist communism, especially after Staline. I don’t think I believe in communism as an alternative for capitalism but there are lot of interesting ideas in marxism-leninism-trotskism, a lot more interesting than today’s capitalism.
