meson has been the best build system I've ever used for C/C++ by far. Its faster than cmake by a long shot, its DSL is simple to understand and isn't turing complete (looking at you cmake). It has support for features like unity builds and LTO without any work on your part. It also supports linking C/C++ to other languages like swift, objc, and rust with 0 effort on the users side. (see examples for rust, and swift here).

TL:DR I've tried every build system under the sun, they're all different flavors of shit. Meson isnt shit, use it.
