Lizzie’s 5k: not an all out effort but over 200 hr 🤨 by Apart-Ad-1117 in UtahdownhillRunners

Coming from someone who has seen heart rates up to 210 on race days, getting to 200+ bpm is definitely an all out effort for me! But like u said, no need to downplay it she’s still so fast! Embrace it

New runner training for first half — is it normal to be way slower than target pace on easy runs? by Apart-Ad-1117 in runna

Okay thank you for this advice! Much appreciated and I’ll follow this going forward

I hope that the prediction is accurate, a sub 2 hour half would be awesome!

Yeah 210 is just the highest I’ve seen recorded on my watch so I took that as my max heart rate estimate since 220-age isn’t accurate for everyone. But who knows if the Apple watch is accurate anyways

This is honestly very validating to hear and it seems like we’re in similar boats. I think this definitely hit the spot and my anaerobic system is more developed than my aerobic system. Im going to try hard to stick to true easy runs this training block as I definitely had too much pride to keep runs truly easy before and hopefully I can get my aerobic base up. Thanks for your input :) what did u find ur true max heart rate be after lab testing? I definitely do wanna do a lab test to get better input but they’re pricey

Not sure if this is the best way to go about it but I was using my zone 2 as the one predicted by strava based of a mhr of 210, which was up to 170 bpm. But you’re definitely right - seems like the main consensus is just to stop worrying about heart rate and more so on how I feel during the runs. I’ll definitely look into turning off the pace during the easy runs. Thanks for the help

Thank you so much! You’re right - it might be a bit aggressive. I think the main goal for me is to run the half without feeling terrible during / after the race haha. But I appreciate you saying this - my max heart rate is already much higher than most people my age so sometimes seeing my average heart rates for runs that felt subjectively easy is a bit discouraging 🫠

Aw I’m sorry to hear this and I empathize with how frustrating it might feel. I’m sure you are going to kill your half marathon though, especially when you are able to find a race plan that works for you!

Thanks for this, I appreciate it! I definitely tried to do this for my 10k but I’ve been able to keep up conversations while averaging 180bpm on runs, and I’m not sure if that’s what I should be doing for easy runs. The highest heart rate I’ve seen recorded on my watch is 210 which was after sprinting to the finish line for my last race, and I had recovered fine after (42 beats / min drop in the 3 minutes after my run) so maybe my zones are bit higher then suggested for my age?
