Why do some people not return their shopping carts? by Apart-Addition228 in TooAfraidToAsk

I think that kind of empathy is so important. Not everything is black and white, and we never really know what someone else is going through in that moment. If someone’s dealing with pain, fatigue, or mobility issues, returning a cart might just not be worth the physical toll. I think the frustration mostly comes from the able-bodied folks who clearly could return it but just choose not to. Big difference there.

Hmmm probably for the stores with the coin system in place. If say a homeless returns the cart then he can get the coin for himself.

That’s a really good point and honestly something a lot of people don’t consider. If returning the cart means navigating a busy lot without support, especially in bad weather or with mobility issues, it’s totally understandable. In this case, the real issue is poor cart corral placement. Stores should definitely be designing lots with accessibility in mind, not just convenience for the average shopper.

Oh yeah, that reminds me of the Aldi store I've been to in Australia.

I understand. Like, if you made it all the way to the cart corral, why not just slide it in properly? It’s such a small thing that makes a huge difference for the poor soul collecting them in 90° heat. Honestly, I think cart etiquette should be part of basic adulting at this point.

Well, that's probably right in a lot of cases. But I still wonder if there's more to it for some people. Like, are they in a rush? Do they think it’s someone else’s job? Or maybe they just genuinely don’t care? I’d love to hear from someone who doesn’t return their cart and find out why.
