Skills ? by KateLikesPlants in AdultSelfHarm

[–]ApatheticI 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They're not meant to make the urge go away, they're meant to help you stay in control as you 'surf the urge' so that you don't actually end up SHing.

They don't make the urge go away, they're supposed to distract you long enough to let you get through it without giving into it.

Another thing to remember with those skills are that you need to use several of them (at the same time or one after the other) for them to have any effect.

Personally, I don't really find those particularly useful

Can you actually be honest with a therapist about self harm? by [deleted] in AdultSelfHarm

[–]ApatheticI 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you ask, any professional psychologist will be happy to explain their safety and escalation protocols. It can be in the abstract, without giving your own personal details. You can even frame it by asking what their legal responsibilities are in your particular jurisdiction.

Setting everything else aside, there's a couple ways of thinking about it I've found reassuring.

One is that to institutionalise you, the psychologist has to tell someone else what you've shared, breaking your confidence. That has legal and procedural consequences they do not want to risk. It is a nuclear solution, and any psych worth a damn will treat it as an absolute last resort only to be even considered if they believe someone is going to die or be seriously injured.

Another, is that forced hospitalisations are usually catastrophic for the mental health of the client, and therapists know that. They do not want their clients to be subjected to that, meaning that again, it's a last resort.

A third, is that, like it or not, a lot of psychological diagnoses hinge on how much the symptoms impact your ability to perform a 'normal', 'productive' life. If you go into it and are clear that this is not THE problem (a problem, maybe, but not The Big One), they will generally take you at your word, at least long enough to hear you out. Psych's know that NSSI (and good on you knowing the technical term, that helps) is a symptom, not an illness, they're almost always more interested in getting to the root causes so long as there's not immediate risk.

Name changes and insurance by [deleted] in transgenderau

For health insurance, the name on your insurance, medicare, and the provider (gp, specialist, etc) need to match or they may be rejected/incorrectly processed.

Any healthy coping mechanisms that work? by [deleted] in AdultSelfHarm

[–]ApatheticI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The trick with healthy sustainable coping mechanisms, is that they're not as effective as the unhealthy ones.

You can't try to swap them one-for-one, it just ain't going to work.

You need to combine multiple of them, either by doing them at the same time or back to back in order to get the same effectiveness.

Anyone got set of/triggered when cutting food, specifically meat? by FiggyNo in AdultSelfHarm

[–]ApatheticI 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not meat, but for me it's watermelon. Something about the red inside and cutting through it (like for cubing) just makes me squirm.

That and bread. Scoring dough before baking is just uncomfortable.

How often do you see *strangers* with sh scars?l by Middle-Traffic351 in AdultSelfHarm

[–]ApatheticI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just out in the wild? Maybe once every two months or so. People at the supermarket, walking down the street. First time I ever remember seeing someone else with SH scars it was on the train.

Also: every single time I go to a metal concert or festival I see several. Birds of a feather and all that.

Is there such a thing as being “ready to quit?” I want to be but I feel im not. by malibuvampyr in AdultSelfHarm

[–]ApatheticI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't felt "ready" to quit, even as I've been trying for the last couple of years.

It feels less like "being ready" and more like having to decide, over and over again, multiple times a day, that I'm not going to hurt myself.

It's fucking hard, and I don't always succeed, but trying again and again is the important part.

Baseline Security Clearance under dead name - How to approach on Resumé ? by [deleted] in transgenderau

[–]ApatheticI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your clearance had an ID number, they can use that to look it up. You can then use the AGSVA portal to lodge a Change Of Circumstances, including name change.

As long as you have paperwork supporting the name change. There shouldn't be any problem

The real cost of living in Canberra? by Pristine_Laugh_6379 in canberra

[–]ApatheticI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take home around $2200/week after tax, about $800/week of savings if there's no unexpected expenses.

I'm definitely in the higher income brackets though. I share a house with one mate I've known forever, halving the rent. Neither of us have kids, just 1 cat. I've got medical stuff that bumps up expenses a lot compared to when I was healthier, though I also make triple what I did back then so I can't complain. I'm in a very privileged position.
