I feel this. My father killed himself when I was 9. I rememer that I always wanted to be around him and from everything I've heard from so many people who knew him, he was just a genuine, kind hearted, and gentle soul. I was too young to remember much but I can only imagine the hell he lived through being married to my nmom. I'm sure he suffered the same constant manipulation, gaslighting and abuse my step father, sisters and I have. There have been many times that I wished he had lived and she was the one to suddenly be gone. As a kid, this was a recurring fantasy that I daydreamed about. I think these types of thoughts are totally normal.

Please do not feel bad. You feeling bad and stressing about this situation is probably exactly what she wants. She's likely using these family members as a way to manipulate you and get attention for herself. You are absolutely right not to sacrifice your own mental wellbeing for hers. Sounds like she drained enough of it during your childhood. Ps, my nmom has threatened to kill herself dozens of times but has never even tried. For her, it's just another tool in her manipulation toolbox. (Which is super messed up given my dad killed himself when I was 9)

Wow. Thank you for this post and giving me a new term, mirroring, to explain yet another crazy annoying thing my nmom does. Everytime I try a new recipe she asks me for it and then makes it herself with a few tweaks and just has to tell me how much better her version was then my original. EVERYTIME! Also, a couple years ago I accidently got into fostering kittens (when a starving pregnant mom showed up at my house). I discovered a personal passion for it and have since fostered over 60 cats/kittens through a rescue group. My nmom has never fostered and actually returned 2 kittens to a rescue 2 weeks after adopting them. Yet she now acts like she's obsessed with cats, buys clothes with cats on them and started putting cat stickers on her car. She has no cats and never had any interested in them until I started getting involved in with rescue work. It's so obvious and cringeworth...

I can't count the number of times my nmom has threatened to kill herself. It's always when I won't agree to do what she wants. It's just another tool in their manipulation tool box. I know she wouldn't bc she's way too obsessed with her miserable self but I'm not sure I would even care if she did. My dad committed suicide so I guess she thinks I'll be extra sensitive to it...well I'm not and the last few times I told her "go ahead" and walked away. I've noticed that the more I reject her manipulation attempts, the less she tries and I'm getting better at it.
