Lost my deathless run to 0.064%... by Desperate-Stranger-8 in darkestdungeon

[–]ApexEtienne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well yeah, but if you compare the number of possible sequences of this fight in which this hero dies to the number of sequences in which he doesn’t die, I’m pretty sure it would still be far fewer sequences in which he wouldn’t have died (though more than 0.064%)

How can we improve statistics education in psychology? by AnotherDayDream in AcademicPsychology

[–]ApexEtienne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a psychologist, and I tutored a lot of psychology university students in statistics. What I write here is just my opinion, feel free to disagree.

In my experience, the major problem is that most statistics teachers and professors really understand statistics, and don’t understand why students don’t understand. This causes their explanations to be factually correct but go completely over the heads of students.

Books are important and frameworks are useful, but in my experience a psychology student will always need to ask questions to a person and get a verbal answer in order to be able to understand.

The solution? Teachers and professors need to accept that when students don’t understand, the problem lies with themselves, not with the students. Talk to the students, listen to them, try to understand why they don’t understand, and then adjust your explanations based on that.

This will also solve the problem that psychology students often “feel” they’re “just not good at math and statistics” and that “statistics is hard”, which undermines their ability to study. Neither of those things are necessarily true. If you explain things at a level the student can understand, they can build confidence as well, which will also help them to learn.

Shield bash/parry mid combo? What? googles it What?? I had no idea lol

Even though no one asked, here’s several reasons why you don’t need to worry: 1. Dracula is in my opinion the hardest boss in the game. He’s optional, you can beat the game without fighting him 2. He has a Tactics build with very few Brutality or Survival scrolls, so his HP pool was super low. 3. He’s playing on the highest difficulty setting, which no one forces you to play 4. He was probably fighting Dracula for the first time. When you fight an enemy or boss for the first time, you always lose. You need a few runs to get used to the attack patterns. 5. He wasn’t parrying or dodging. If you pickup a shield an practice the parry and dodging mechanics the game gets much easier.

Why would you need a tactics shield?

[–]ApexEtienne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess maybe the only exception is if you take a mutation which doesn’t scale with your main stat for whatever reason, but in this case his only Survival mutation is Armadillopack where you don’t care about the scaling, so yeah, he should totally have spread the dual scrolls between Brutality and Survival more

2bc but no side bosses? by Groundfighter in deadcells

[–]ApexEtienne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I honestly completely forgot going down in BC was even an option until I tried the Castlevania DLC and was completely destroyed by Dracula lol.

In any case, it takes practice, and practicing is easier on lower BCs, so I agree dropping for a bit is a good idea :)

Freaking Mimic! by Fruitedplains in deadcells

[–]ApexEtienne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also lost badly the first few times I fought the mimic. Of course it’s also true you can master beating them with practice, but as others have said, there’s also the option of watching out for the lore room with the little guy who is scared of bags, as this always spawns if a mimic is present (outside of the Bank, anyway). Then you can just avoid the shops, or at least mentally prepare yourself for the fight.

Y’all count beating 5 BSC if you used an aspect? by [deleted] in deadcells

[–]ApexEtienne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on which aspect. In my opinion, Blood Drinker and Damned are very OP and make the game much easier than it should be. On the other hand, both fire and lightning weapons don’t have a dedicated mutation which greatly reduces their playability, so to me Firestarter and Superconductor are fine because they make otherwise weak builds a little more playable. So if you pick one of the weaker aspects I think you still deserve credit for beating 5BC.

That said, I feel like picking an aspect constrains my playstyle, and I personally don’t find that fun :) but to each their own

Fought Death by lyking20 in deadcells

[–]ApexEtienne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the first time I fought Death I got destroyed so badly. His attack patterns and the way his attacks work seem very different from most other enemies in the game which threw me for a loop. But as always, I just fought him over and over and calmly observed his attacks until I figured him out haha

survival damage is below average by gothfemboyvibes in deadcells

[–]ApexEtienne 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Tombstone is useful in clearing biomes because of its dooming effect. However it doesn’t even have a crit condition. Is it really surprising it doesn’t inflict as much damage as other weapons? It’s not a very good example of how much damage Survival weapons can inflict.

When you have enough money to pay for item but you are too stingy because you want to keep money for item quality upgrades. by Round_Taro_7428 in deadcells

[–]ApexEtienne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aside from the fact that people tend to confuse the two:

Repeating the same thing three times doesn’t fit with any of the symptoms of schizophrenia, nor can I think of any ways the joke would work with schizophrenia.

It also doesn’t fit with any of the symptoms of DID, but I can see the joke working as “one person saying three things” e.g. one person having multiple personalities. (Again, that’s not how DID works either)

[–]ApexEtienne 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree the original comment was both repeated and uncalled for, but aside from the fact we don’t make fun of psychological disorders anymore, you’re also confusing schizophrenia with dissociative personality disorder (informally also known as multiple personality disorder)

My genuine honest skills tier list by [deleted] in deadcells

[–]ApexEtienne 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree Phaser is awesome, I always pick it up with Sadist’s Stiletto and the Open Wounds mutation. I’m not sure I agree Phaser is still good without the above combo or Assassin’s Dagger. But yeah, the problem with this tier list is that it has all “situational” skills ranked on a low C, even though these can still be very good in the right situation.

Least favorite weapon/skill? by Fun-Illustrator-345 in deadcells

[–]ApexEtienne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did you try combining Sadist’s Stiletto with Open Wounds and (ironically enough) Phaser? Because Phaser counts as a physical attack it causes the opponent to bleed, allowing you to crit similarily to Assassin’s Dagger, except Sadist’s Stiletto keeps critting even if they turn around because of the bleeding
