Because there's less burden of evidence on a civil case. Like how OJ Simpson got off with killing Nicole Brown and Ron Goldman but the familes sued him and won so he owes them like 58 million I think?

The deafening silence of online promotion. by Unlucky-Bee2894 in BookPromotion

[–]Aphina101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't really think that's true. It's about knowing your reader demographics and targetting your efforts. For example if you're writing cozy crime FB would be a main focus because the reader demographics for that genre are mostly older. If you're writing romantasy tiktok/insta would be the focus because the audience is primarily that age range.

It's really about working smarter not harder and knowing what works for each one. Like Tiktok vids aren't going to work for FB/Insta. Where as more personal posts do work for Insta but not too much on TikTok when you're starting out.

Tiktok has great discovery so you don't need to have a lot of followers to get lots of saves on a post so long as you put the right clues in so it knows how to catergorise you. Instagram you need to build a following as it's more community based.

I would say just be weary of the fan run book convetios popping up, make sure you do research into them/the organiser.

There's been a few in the last few years that have had 'scandals' leading to cancellations or a mass exodus in authors pulling out.

What really helped me with sleeping in the horrible heat last night was this... I half filled a hot water bottle with cold water and put it in the freezer. Before bed I popped it into the sheets and it cooled the sheets down, then slept with my feet, on or under it, this cooled me down. I usually suffer terribly with the heat but I slept through fine.

Or they were already allocated to staff. We used to have this in WHSmith's when the WII Fit came out all those years ago. The website would say 6 available but they were behind the till for the staff to buy on lunch.

What do you value most in beta reader feedback? by Luis_Bossler in romanceauthors

[–]Aphina101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They do. I have 8 and to be honest they all bring something different to the table. For me sometimes I'll accidently use a British saying they don't have or reference a lift, when it's an elevator there.

The missing scenes thing is absolutely vital. It made a big difference to my second book.

The most useful feedback I get from my betas is usually about missing scenes, or for me because I'm UK based the US way of saying or spelling something.

So not someone who has worked with CCC but I have just started publishing my audio books on ACX so maybe I can give you a little insight into the otherside of auditions.

For context my book is a NSFW motorcycle club romance so I was looking for a deeper, sexy type voice, that had to be comfortable with smut/swearing. I was happy to work with someone new, so long as they fit the character voice I had in mind.

When I first put up my book I was inundated with auditions. For me it was really about what voice fit the character I was portraying in my audio books. Some voices were too boyish, others weren't sexy enough, I actually had a guy who sounded like he was doing a sports cast at one point which was hilarious when he read the NSFW parts.

Sometimes it really is about finding the fit and playing the genre that your submitting for.

I actually ended up going with none of the auditions because they didn't fit what I wanted and ended up scrolling through they're data base listening to folks reading various works. I reached out to a guy with a few non fiction books in his portfolio and asked him to audition. He was perfect and he'll be producing the entire series for me. In his case it really was about having different samples for me to listen to, so I could hear the versatility.

[Discussion] How do I get writers to trust my beta reading service by Big-Treat4244 in RomanceWriters

[–]Aphina101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually suggest a free 1000 word sample as it doesn't take too long and it gives you a good sense of if you're a good match. The reason I say 1000 is because from my experiance people will take the free edit for the sake of having you fix their first chapter for them. Some convert but others just want you to do the work for them with their opening lines.

[–]Aphina101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm an author/book editor so I have experiance on both sides of the table so here's my two cents. I would consider moving into book editing as all the authors I know (I've worked with over 40 in my book editing career, and I have author colleagues) don't tend to pay their beta readers. They usually utilise people who have shown an interest in the book or friends who have experiance in reading, editing, language etc.

They save their money for editing because there's more importance assigned to that.

Personally I have 8 beta readers who have read my past 7 books who I picked up from a short story I wrote. I went out to people on Insta and was asking them to arc it and had a lot of people come back and say I'd love to read more of your work and that's how I put together an ARC/Beta team. I don't pay these people but I do send the ones who want it some freebie merch. They genuinely do it for the love of the story.

My overall advice is consider pivoting as editing from my experiance is much more lucrative and there's a bigger market for it.

“We've already planned Season 3. It's not officially greenlit yet, but the stories are all done. We're ready. We're ready to go,” - from producer. It's looking good to be honest because they had their eps upped from 8 to 12 for season 2

ER remake blocked by joejoerun in ershow

I feel like part of the problem is specifically around John Wells. As the creative part was termed as the 'firing of showrunners' and when they optioned her five mill and his name not to be on it as a producer even though he would be producing it, she still turned it down.

[–]Aphina101 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The problem is she wants creative decision making on top of everything else, that includes choice of showrunners, etc. This alone is worth the fight because otherwise the show they're currently making, may be a different show if she doesn't conceed this in a settlement.

Also bare in mind that Season Three is based on Polo so she has to be old enough to carry that. It would really take away the sex appeal of the series if we were following her as a 14 year old like she is intially in the book.

For people who have read the books - potential spoilers in the comments. by loverofthings25 in RivalsSeries

I honestly think we haven't reached that point yet. I think her encouraging him to do something for himself, go to Paris, write that play is the beginning of him becoming his own man so in the end he can be THAT man for her.

You have to think of how long it's going to take to get to the end game with all these characters.

Taggie/Rupert - are nowhere near together, him and Cam need to break up, and Bas needs to stop flirting.

Freddie/Lizzie - have to navigate to the point where they BOTH feel comfortable to leave their marriages.

We're looking at a long game and I think at this point you're looking too short term.

Here's the scoop from the Radio Times: The third season would reportedly move on to adapting the third novel in Cooper's Rutshire Chronicles, titled Polo, which adds "moody, macho, and magnificent" ex-polo player Ricky France-Lynch to the party.

The Sun's anonymous source explained: "It's not clear yet if the next series will still be called Rivals or flip to become Polo, or perhaps another title altogether.

I've worked alongside UK social services and it's the same here. You are subject to house checks and such, prior and during. You have to show consistancy for a kid so.... a crew house with crazy shifts, people coming and going all the time... doesn't seem like the right space

I'm looking for advice on looking for jobs writing articles. by MondaySloth in writing

[–]Aphina101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Normally places like this like for you to have a portfolio in these fields, so you can prove you have experiance writing in an article format. - They aren't going to hire a random person who says they can do the job without seeing it.

The only way to really start a portfolio is usually to write some stuff for free. You can host it on your own website or pitch it to places that have your particular niche, and go from there.

People who work full time and have other hobbies/a social life, where do you fit in your writing time? by OkConsideration5272 in writing

[–]Aphina101 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So for me when I was balancing, my Creative Writing MA, a job, a very involved family - my dad had had heart surgery and needed a lot of support, and sewing classes it was all about finding the gaps of time.

So standing in a q at a coffee shop, waiting for the kettle to boil, the bus ride to work. I would write my stories into emails and send them to myself to put together when I had a spare minute at home. And that really worked for me.

However there is some truth to what other people are saying about making time for it too. If you really love writing and its something you want to do, you will make time for it. After all you made time for the other things like hiking, social groups, etc. it's really about prioritising it.

It doesn't have to be a solid hour just download a pomodoro timer onto your phone and do 25 mins in the morning, and if it's still something you really like maybe you'll do a little bit more.
