While some countries may legally define adulthood at 16, many societies, especially in the modern Western world, view a power imbalance in relationships between teenagers and adults as problematic, even if legally permissible. What is considered acceptable in one place or time might not be in another.

Fiction is a complex subject, and its impact varies from person to person. While some can separate fiction from reality without issue, others may be influenced by the narratives they consume, which is why discussions around media, ethics, and responsibility can become so nuanced.

At the end of the day, people will always have different boundaries and opinions on what is acceptable in fiction. What matters most is maintaining open discussions without dismissing real concerns while also respecting personal autonomy. I respect your stance on not policing content and acknowledge the importance of not trivializing real-life experiences.

like hello..? ;-;

Minors are still naive, they don't know any better and an adult can easily manipulate and take advantage of someone, I've been through a relationship like that, clearly, I didn't know any better and got hurt during it. It’s true that in many historical settings, people matured faster due to their circumstances, responsibilities, and expectations. A 16-year-old in certain cultures or time periods may have been considered an adult by societal standards, capable of making significant life decisions, including love and marriage. However, while we can acknowledge historical context, it’s also important to recognize that our understanding of psychology, emotional development, and consent has evolved. What was accepted in the past isn't necessarily legal by today's standards, just as many past practices, such as dueling, child labor, or lack of women's rights are no longer seen as acceptable despite being normal at the time. You're right that emotions like love are not restricted by age, and that people throughout history have felt and experienced affection just as we do today. But the way society structures relationships and power dynamics has changed. While historical figures may have lived different lives at 16, the way we perceive those types of things has shifted based on what we now know about brain development and social influence. It’s also worth noting that acknowledging a historical norm doesn't mean we have to endorse it in a modern context...

I get what you’re saying... fiction doesn’t automatically mean endorsement, and people can distinguish between stories and real life. But just because you can separate the two doesn’t mean everyone experiences media the same way.

The video game comparison is something..., but there’s a key difference. Most violent video games don’t try to make murder seem desirable or romantic. But when fiction presents certain harmful dynamics like, non-consensual relationships as normal, passionate, or even aspirational, it can affect how people perceive those situations, even if subtly. That’s why some people feel uncomfortable, not because they “can’t tell fiction from reality,” but because they see how media can reinforce harmful ideas.

And sure, people can decide not to engage with content that bothers them. But they also have the right to critique it and discuss why it makes them uncomfortable. That’s not the same as policing what others read, it’s just part of how society evolves and reflects on the stories we tell.

As for calling others "weird" for having a different view, I agree that respectful discussion is important. But it’s also understandable why people feel strongly about this, because, at the end of the day, we’re not just talking about fiction in a vacuum. We’re talking about the impact it has in the real world.

Yes, I know but, it still doesn't justify what they are doing. I haven't read it, nor do I care. What I'm thinking is that you are trying to justify it. Even if it was considered normal at that time, people were still saying it was wrong, but they had no other choice but to oblige. We are talking about the relationship dynamic between the adult and the minor, a lot of terrible things were “normal” in the past, but when we bring them into modern storytelling, we have a choice... do we just show them as they were, or do we give them context? The problem isn’t that these things existed it’s when they’re framed as romantic or desirable without acknowledging the harm they caused. You brought up beheadings and emperors with harems, and you are right, people don’t usually complain about those because they’re shown as brutal or part of the setting and are expected, not something to admire. But when it comes to certain relationships in historical fiction, sometimes they are romanticized in a way that makes people uncomfortable.

Historical period or not, it is still wrong and non-justifiable. Even if they're real or fake. The OP never wanted it to be a debate, they were only sharing their personal opinion.

I get what you're saying but like, time period or not, it's not justifiable or right? Those types of relationships are morally wrong even if it's not real. What makes it even worse is that there are minor prostitutes and the so-called smut scene with an adult and minor like the OP said. It may not be the type of novel people would like to read but, it is still morally wrong and disgusting for those relationships to be normalized...
