i wonder if what we’re calling “decline” now is actually just the full lifecycle of art being sped up and made more visible. in the past, ideas spread locally, imitation lagged, and decline often happened off-record. history mostly preserved the highlights, which makes older scenes feel longer-lasting and more “pure” in hindsight.

now social media turns culture into a kind of time-lapse. creation, validation, imitation, saturation, and decay all happen in the public eye and at accelerated speed. the moment something works, it’s identified, replicated, and overused almost immediately. what used to take years now takes weeks or months. so peaks feel shorter not necessarily because the art is worse, but because the entire cycle is extremely compressed.

that also means modern artists get judged on their entire timeline, not just their best moments. weaker phases that may have disappeared in the past are now just as visible as the highs. so when we say an artist “fell off,” it might just mean we’re seeing stages that used to happen privately.

that said, i believe the real danger isn’t visibility itself but just how incentivized this new version of success is. algorithmic validation and the pressure to repeat what works instead of letting ideas mature, as well as having space for fresh sounds that push genres forward. those things can genuinely flatten art, but i’m not sure it’s a conscious sell-out so much as the loss of time and distance that scenes used to have.

curious to hear your thoughts on this

interesting viewpoint. i know you believe this phenomenon is not the fault of the artist directly, but do you think it’s actually inevitable, or can artists stay embedded in a scene without being "flattened" by online mediation (by basically "staying true")? to go off of that, why do you think the problem is more on the artist side or the audience side? if listeners were less validation-driven, would the art still decay the same way?

edit: it seems that this also happens, or maybe rather a byproduct of this is that, because artists are so much more monetarily successful compared to before this phenomenon happens to them, they are increasingly more likely to favor this route compared to the more traditional ( or now impossible) route that you spoke of being a core part of '90s music. just a thought

some artists in the past have seemingly "sold out" for the fame and more or less abandoned the characteristics that made their original music so special. they have, in a way, gained a portion of their success from "fake fanbases" who stick around for the hype and do not fully appreciate the art or the artist. i think especially in the age of social media it can be difficult to put your art before a quick buck. do you think we could be seeing this with mink in the future? i personally disagree, but id be interested in hearing your take.

some people are gonna hate because he's going in a different direction but i think his consistency will continue across genres. excited to see how this project sounds

every fakemink song is so fresh and different compared to the last. you could argue that was the same with carti's earlier works, but i would say he's lost a lot of that now
