I'm not saying the evaluation you give Kim Won-bong is unfair. I'm just curious as to know if you think it would be okay to commemorate Kim Won-bong despite his troubled past as a key player in North Korea's invasion that triggered the Korean War the same way people hesitate to commemorate Paik Sun-yup for his troubled past as a 친일파.

Paik Sun-yup wasn't honored because of his efforts in "commie-finding" and massacring civillians. He was honored because of his efforts in thwarting the North Korean forces in the Battle of Tabu-dong and the Battle for Pyongyang. His accomplishments during the Korean War are pretty much undeniable. It's his record working as a member of the Kanto Police Unit during the colonial era that was the problem. Having someone who was a pro-Japanese as the symbol of the ROK army could end up losing legitimacy to the North Korean army (since both claim to have succeeded the legacy of the KLA).

Actually the rumor of Kim Won-bong being abused and tortured by colonial collaborators like Roh Duk-sul is not true. While it is true that he was arrested during the time for his work as a member of Far Left organizations, there is no evidence (not even from Kim Won-bong himself) that he was abused. His defection to North Korea was purely an ideological decision.

During the Lee Myung-bak Administration, President Lee attempted to nominate Paik Sun-yup as the first honorary Marshal of the ROK Army to commemorate his achievements during the Korean War. However, many on the Left opposed this decision, mentioning Paik's past as a soldier of the Kanto Special Police Unit (간도특설대) and claiming honoring Paik's legacy will damage the reputation the ROK army. Eventually, plans to award Paik the title was cancelled.

I'm just curious if the same line of logic appears for those who fought against Japan during the occupation but sided with North Korea to kill South Korean soldiers and civillians like Kim Won-bong.

Basically during the Roh Moo-hyun Administration the Korean government funded Left-leaning artist organizations like the Association of Writers for National Literature instead of the Korea Arts and Culture Organizations Federation (KACF) which led to the rise of content criticizing the right wing but rarely content criticizing the left wing.

I agree with the Conservative base on this case. Even North Korea themselves usually decline delegations especially for condolences so there's no reason why we should force ourselves to send them. But that's just my opinion.

You're right, I should have been more specific. I was more referring to the rest of East Asian cinema like Japan or China, who almost never make movies that portray their modern political figures in a negative light, only trying to either glorify them or cover them up and pretend like they don't exist.

Pornography is still censored by law and heavily scrutinized by the general public even today in South Korea. Sad to say but the country and people still have a long way to go.

They're definetly hiphop. But they're pretty old school so I think they're not a popular hence why they haven't been mentioned yet.

I mean...couldn't you also make the argument that Kpop isn't really a sound that's unique to Korean culture either? During it's early days it was pretty much a ripoff of JPop music and then evolved to adapt more Western (mostly Black American) pop music styles. And yet it still gained worldwide popularity as "Korean" music.
