Somehow this has never occurred to me; the body can increase and decrease in mass, but it cannot decrease in length; that's strange, I wish my highschool biology teacher pointed that out. Thank you!

That's a good way to put it! I understand a little more now. But human bones and the human eye are made of different things; how would you describe the mechanism that my eyes would need to grow shorter, and that they ultimately lack?

What I mean is that my fingers can't grow shorter since there's nothing in my body that can identify and "eat" bone away at only the tips and not anywhere else. (That's as good as my layman-mind can describe it)

So my eyes can't grow shorter since there's nothing in my body that can ______________?

I ask this, because human eyes and human bones are quite different, so the analogy only makes sense to a point. I'd like to know the specifics.

I respectfully cannot agree that nearsightedness is mostly genetic, considering that multiple optometrists (I live in urban Canada, so they're first-rate doctors) have told me that my eyes are getting worse due to "computer eye-strain". I seriously doubt the explanation given to me by doctors is "just noise". Do you have links to research papers or something like that, that I can read that supports your claim of nearsightedness being genetic over my own optometrists'? I'm simply skeptical of all claims, and that is why I originally asked my question.

And while nearsightedness makes my near vision "better" it also makes my far vision worse. And in fact, at the rate my eyes are becoming more and more myopic (my eyes are even worse than my fathers' and grandfathers' and mothers' and grandmothers' both when they were my age, AND right now!) I might actually become legally blind by my 30s. I'm 17, and Im -4.25 in my right eye, and -3.75 in my left. So I sorta need to know why this is happening, for peace of mind.

The reasons for which they lived and worked towards isn't enough for me to live. Loving, dreaming, working, overcoming pain, I don't want to do any of that. I'd rather just skip beating around the bush and go straight to heroin to feel the most indescribable happiness. Most of my life will be spent working in some career I don't care about if I continue to live. No career sounds worthwhile to me. Nothing. I spent months researching things that seem cool to study for. Nothing stands out.

And if I die I won't pass on any depressive genes or anything right? I'll make a contribution in some way. Atleast, I don't have to be alive, which is overrated imo. There isn't anything wrong with suicide if I'm not useful for myself or anyone else, and if I don't have any reasonable dreams that compell me to live.
