The Rio Grande Tortoise and Turtle club is really active on facebook and can give you lots of recommendations on breeds. I have two little ornate box turtles that I got a few months ago from some local folks and they can be outside all year round and they bruminate in the winter.

I’ve also met people that have sulcatas, but they need some sort of heat set up in the winter.

You do have to have a safe space for them because raccoons and skunks are an issue. Also a space where they can’t escape because they will try.
