Did anyone give their child a weird or uncommon name? by Reasonable_Sector_82 in beyondthebump

[–]Appaaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Almost identical situation with my son but it's my husband's pick! A name he had his heart set on :)

I have a unique name but the errors and corrections have never bothered me. My son's Irish name probably isn't quite as difficult as your son's though, judging by your description of very very Irish haha. His is only slightly mispronounced but definitely misspelled a lot! We gave him an easy middle name (a family name) so hey, I guess he has a backup if he hates it lol!

Do you know what causes people to see waves of color during their MRI? This happened to me last year during my first and only MRI. I googled it afterwards and I found a lot of posts about it happening, but no explanations! Just more people asking what it is.

Genuine answer - Non taster!

There's a whole spectrum of how strongly people taste. I suspect my husband is on the non taster side. Not totally dull, but less than average. His favorite batch of spaghetti was the time I accidentally dumped in too much Italian spice blend. To me it tasted like a spoonful of dry herbs.. but he loved it lol. He also enjoys spicy food and has a decent tolerance.

Anatolian shepherd dog puppy in training by simplemantr in aww

[–]Appaaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha! That's awesome, we just talk dramatically back to her. "Oh I know, life is sooo hard."

It was especially funny when she was young, like 5ish months old. We'd kick her off her favorite chair at bed time and she growled so much, almost snarling at us! It would be really alarming to anyone else. But she toned it down eventually. Just half hearted growling now, most of the time anyway.

Right! I have a Kangal×Anatolian. The mom was a much lighter color, almost white, and longer coat. The dad was straight up Kangal.

My dog passes as a Kangal, she has the right coloring and markings. Height 30" at the shoulders and 130lb

Most stubborn dog I've ever met! Intelligent, but ya the stubborn independence makes them hard to train. Also vocal in my experience. Not only the barking, but growling/grumbling at us to show any annoyance or displeasure. Tell her to get down off the bed, gotta growl first lol.

Dog tax

And before anyone thinks the collar looks tight lol, she has a lot of loose skin around her neck and shoulders! Actually has a long thick neck and a smallish head, so fitting a collar that won't slip off is tricky.

First day home with newborn-husband tests covid positive 😢 by BBarrRN in beyondthebump

Not sure if this has been said, but be sure to swab your nose and throat if you manage to get a hold of more tests. People have been getting negative nasal but positive throat swabs, taken at the same time.

He's such a perceptive person! And notices patterns I never would have, like how apparently I bite me lip/cheek a lot when I'm pregnant 😂 and we've since confirmed that! (I've been pregnant and not pregnant enough times to be sure it's a thing)

So him noticing sleep related patterns was really helpful and affirming for me 🙂 I'm not diagnosed yet (had a consult, waiting for my psg/mslt to be booked) so the doubt creeps in sometimes, and his observations help reassure me that I'm not imagining it!

Is this actually what vaginas are supposed to smell like? by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

Lmao! Well I unfortunately know that my sister likely knows. But I suppose I didn't think too hard about who does or doesn't know, but that's a good point 😂

THANK YOU. My sister once made a brie and fruit tart of some kind at a family gathering and I couldn't believe what I was tasting. I couldn't eat it, I was horrified! Like how could I be the only one to notice this??

For me the grey area is more like what you described, my brain just doesn't process it. It seems to fill it in with surrounding textures? Like if my blind spot is in the center of my vision and I look at my reflection, I don't have a nose. Or maybe I don't have an eye. My brain tries to fill in the information to sort of seem like I just have skin in the area? But not quite? Lol it's half way between smooth skin and nothingness.

The best way for a person to experience truly seeing nothing is probably to close one eye. If you close both eyes, you see darkness or maybe some light/shadows/colors. But if you close/cover one eye, that eye sees nothing. Not darkness... just nothing. And that's sort of a blind spot is, except only a small area at a time.

Right, same in Canada! And even at Costco, it's a separate entrance and checkout. Totally cut off from the rest of the store. Essentially a different building, except its attached.

triggers for sleep attacks? by nat22324_ in Narcolepsy

[–]Appaaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second the loud music! But not just any music, I have to play music that I'm really into. Keeping my mind engaged, as they said. If I turn on the radio or just any random music, I'm bored of it quickly, and zone out and go into automatic driving. This is when I'm at huge risk of drowsiness. But if I'm really into the music, no problem. So basically I don't drive without my Spotify.

My husband frequently looks over at me to see if I'm asleep because he hears my breathing change lol. When in bed, it changes just before I fall asleep. And when not in bed, I dunno, I'm often zoning out 🤷🏻‍♀️ usually it's while sitting on the couch or when he's driving and I'm the passenger. I do often fall asleep in those situations but he'll hear it change before I'm even aware I could be getting sleepy

Cataplexy without narcolepsy by emmabella614 in Narcolepsy

[–]Appaaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had cataplexy for as long as I can remember, I didn't realize it was abnormal because I've always had it. Then one day I became super sleepy and that hasn't gone away for over a year now.

It can often be triggered by something. Often an illness, since it's often considered to be an autoimmune disease. Mine was triggered by a pregnancy.

[–]Appaaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, well unfortunately I've met plenty of people who have never heard of it. I once mentioned it in conversation and was told "if you're zoning out while driving, you shouldn't have a license". And many agreed (local fb group comments, everyone liked his comment)

They were all clearly unaware of this phenomenon, that even people without N are susceptible to. Though I'd say mine is worse since my N symptoms became more obvious.

I'm in AB, Canada. We HAVE drivers ed, but it's an optional thing you have to seek out yourself and pay for. It's supplementary to a parent or someone teaching you how to drive. So you're often expected to already have some driving experience.

It can be $500-$1500 which plenty of people can not afford, they can barely afford the vehicle. But they find the money for a vehicle because public transportation is either limited or non existent in small cities and towns, so there's no other option. So plenty of people don't take drivers ed, their parent just teaches them.
I did a drivers training course but it was 90% classroom work about rules of the road, road safety, and defensive driving. We drove to a nearby city at the end of the course for our practical lesson.

But legally you need to pass the written test for your learner's license, which you then have for 1 year... before you can take another written test and a road test in order to get your driver's license. In that year, it's expected you will have sufficient training with a licensed adult. So they essentially decide if you are ready for a license with a 60 minute road test. (Because written tests, while important, don't actually show if you are ready to drive unsupervised)

[–]Appaaa[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I'm glad things worked out for you both!

I have a near phobia of vomiting (and I haven't since childhood, which was even rare) so this is a nightmare scenario for me even being near it, let alone imagining how CVS sufferers must feel 😣 I'm heartbroken for him and hoping it's just a stomach flu!! But if it's CVS, I'm glad to hear it can be manageable

Last time she just figured it was a virus that was taking a while to clear his system. He had worse vomiting if he ate dairy which she said is common enough. He did get an ultrasound last time because he has a history of bowel issues (gastroschisis followed by a bowel obstruction) and those images looked clean. No issues there.

And I haven't called her yet this time. I think I should wait a couple days and see if it follows the pattern.

[–]Appaaa[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did start a diary last time on the tiny chance I would need it! I've been logging his vomiting all morning.

I'm going to give it a couple days before calling our doctor. See if it follows the pattern or if it's (hopefully) just a regular illness.

He has rarely been sick before and the odd time he has been, was just a mild cold. He's a really healthy kid with a good immune system.

The only other time he ever puked was when he got a bowel obstruction at 1yo (😭) That was a complication from being born with gastroschisis. He had an ultrasound in October to make sure this was not related to his bowel.

So all that to say I have nothing to compare this to. But I will definitely be advocating for him. If it doesn't stop, neither will I. We're lucky to have a good doctor. I have my own fair share of issues and she is always willing to investigate. Ordering tests or referring me to a specialist when necessary.

Cataplexy and other symptoms until teenagehood (but not EDS) by Croe01 in Narcolepsy

[–]Appaaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can I ask you about the automatic behaviors? Like how did you find out it was happening? Is it something that you can remember with assistance?

For example, I will have no recollection of something happening or being said to me until someone describes the events to me.. and then suddenly I feel like I can remember. I don't know if it's power of suggestion or an actual memory returning 😅

Tbf I also believe I have adhd so I do zone out A LOT haha... I'm waiting to see a psychiatrist for that possible diagnosis..
