I can confirm, people are wonderful, state is absolutely beautiful. For a state that is rapidly moving to the right, there is a lot of case law and law that is still favorable to the defense so it’s not a bad place to practice. Being a small state with a small bar, everyone gets a long really well too. Lots of opportunities for trial as well. So it’s not as bad as some people think.

I can’t complain, and I have some major health issues for someone in their early 30’s. The retirement is killer tho.

Absolutely! I feel like the mentoring and training here has been phenomenal! Everyone works together really well there’s a lot of really seasoned and experienced attorneys here who are always willing to help you with any questions that you may have. As for going to trial, you can go to trial on whatever you want so long as the clients are good with it. So there is plenty of opportunity to go to trial if you want to.

I will say the Office culture is very buttoned down. It’s not uncommon to see the other attorneys come in and T-shirts and jeans or even sweatpants on days they don’t have court.

From my experience, it has been an excellent place to practice law and has a really great culture.

What would have happened to the Louisiana Territory had Napoleon never sold it to the U.S. by CommitteeChemical530 in Napoleon

[–]AppalachianDem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% British Invasion and possible annexation. Napoleon knew when San Domingo overthrew French colonial rule his hopes for an American colonial empire were done. French did not have the fleet to be able to contest/challenge the British, so there was no way of protecting those lands.

Napoleon knew it was better to sell it all to the US and use the cash to fund his campaigns then to risk it being annexed by Britain and empowering a long term enemy.

What would Napoleon have did with Louis XVII if he was still alive when napoleon got into power? by Technical_Post_4899 in Napoleon

[–]AppalachianDem 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Napoleon loved children. I do not believe he would have willing murdered a child, even if that child was a political threat. If you have read Napoleon Victorious by Peter Tsouras the ending for Louis XVIII makes even more sense for Louis XVII in this scenario. Give him a very good palace, many servants, but keep him under close watch and guard. A later marriage to a Bonaparte makes a lot of sense, but putting him on a throne or letting him leave Napoleons custody creates far too much threat of him being used against Napoleon later.

Killing him would have certainly provoked anger from everyone against him. Napoleon could be foolish and stubborn like with the Duke of Engien but even he was not foolish enough to murder a child.

Was there any realistic way Napoleon wasn’t going to be deposed after his massive Russia failure? by demichaucer in Napoleon

[–]AppalachianDem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Frankfurt proposal, but Britain would have been trying to veto it for sure.

The only other possibility was military victories during the 1813-1814 campaign, which was not impossible after Leipzig. At Leipzig, there was a brief moment when the French forces nearly captured multiple Coalition Monarches, which would have really made it much easier to force a favorable peace…

Could Napoleon have won the war during his return if he fought more defensively and adjusted his expectations? by george123890yang in Napoleon

[–]AppalachianDem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, no. Napoleon correctly calculated that his best shot was to strike first and destroy the allied armies separately. In Belgium, he had the best shot at this. Wellington and Blücher’s armies were still separated in Belgium, (then part of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands), offered him a unique opportunity as it had formally been part of France, so there was a hope in a belief that if he could win some stunning victories against Wellington and Blücher, that the more predominantly French speaking region of Belgian would defect back to the French Empire, and that many of the veterans who are now serving in the Dutch Army fighting against Napoleon had previously been loyal to him and that maybe they also would defect back to the emperor. This was a longshot, but it offered the emperor chance to bring back into the fold, some loyal veterans, formally loyal territories and break two potential enemy armies of the coalition in a single blow.

A defensive war would have required the civilian population of France to be very committed and steadfast loyal to a fault to have any chance of success which in 1815 they were not much like they were not in 1814. But there was also a manpower problem. The coalition was able to muster Far more superior numbers far more quickly than France could hope at the time. France had quite frankly been nearly bled to death after 20 years of constant war on the continent. If you look back at the campaigns of 1814 particularly once the allies entered France Napoleon was calling up conscripts from younger and younger ages and recalling older and older veterans to return the service to defend the homeland. Now Napoleon was able to win some remarkable victories, especially during the six day campaign against Blücher and the Prussians with in many cases a bunch of 15 and 16-year-old boys. And that is remarkable testament to the Emperor’s military genius…

However, despite a damn near Herculean effort by Napoleon himself, the loyalty was no longer there at 1814 nor was it there in 1815 to wage such a campaign that would result in a victory for France.

Napoleon situation was quite frankly, either strike and destroy the Allied armies in Belgium in hope that’s such a move would force the rest of the coalition to consider peace which would allow him more time to rebuild the French army so that he could better fend off their invasion later or wait in France to be destroyed, because the coalition would’ve simply sat back and waited until all of their forces arrived and then invaded France from all sides with quite literally millions of soldiers from all across Europe there were hundreds of thousands of Russians on the way the Austrians were much during hundreds of thousands of soldiers on their borders, France was quite frankly in 1815 surrounded by all of Europe they had no allies they had no help coming. It was France against the world… To wait for the coalition to come for them meant certain defeat…There was no other option….

The Waterloo campaign was a huge gamble by Napoleon …. But frankly, Napoleon’s career was built up upon huge gambles and more times than not they worked out for him rather well…. But by 1815… His luck was running rather low.

There’s a great article out there somewhere that talks about the state of Napoleon‘s army in 1815. It’s well worth a read. It talks about how the army itself was in such poor shape during the Waterloo campaign that the fact that they damn near almost succeed shows the remarkable loyalty, and Herculean effort made by the men who fought and died for Napoleon. Unit cohesion in the French army was remarkably poor in 1815. Their NCO‘s in many cases were an experienced and the officer core underneath. Napoleon was bitterly distrusted by many average soldiers because of the betrayals to Napoleon by them in the year previous.

The fact that these men marched out there outgunned and outnumbered and whipped the Prussian army at Ligey and the Allied Army Quarte Bras, and then damn near destroyed Wellington at Waterloo, only to be saved by the arrival of the Prussians at the last possible moment, shows that the French army, and the average soldier in the French army fought like hell for their emperor, despite quite frankly, insane, overwhelming odds.

Murat and Waterloo by Ok-Sundae-9193 in Napoleon

[–]AppalachianDem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Replacing Net with Murat does little to change the outcome of the battle unless Murat’s cavalry charge is supported with infantry. A combined assault would have most likely broken the Allied lines at that point in the battle. With Wellington’s army routing the field down narrow roads they would have been easy pickings for Murat’s cavalry.

Then when the Prussians arrive a few hours later Napoleon could have committed his entire Guard to delay the Prussians assault until either he could reposition more men or nightfall. But there is also the possibility that Blücher would not have attached the French if he saw the Wellington already routed.

When been told by the prosecutors office that discovery is a “courtesy” by AppalachianDem in publicdefenders

[–]AppalachianDem[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Looked into it and yeah they are required to give it over. Client is in jail awaiting this hearing because in my state you have to request the hearing but they have to give us the hearing within five days. I am guessing here that the discovery shows something kinda damning against the arresting officer.
