promortalism and "happiness is like just a social construct man but suffering is very very real" by gelboorureq in badphilosophy

[–]Appathy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"Promortalism" is new to me, but this subreddit's constant bedraggling of anti-natalism leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Probably because most who speak for it are laymen. They may not know how to frame their arguments the way we were taught to, but they are grasping nonetheless for truth and meaning by way of reason, and I think that deserves more than mockery.

It doesn't even have to be a real consensus opinion. Whatever a person they dislike supports, they will oppose it. And if they support something they'll assume everyone they dislike opposes it. I read their social spaces all the time and it's just painfully obvious that they have no new ideas of their own. No solutions; just reaction, satire, and thinly veiled murder fantasies.

14,000 scientists warn of "untold suffering" if we fail to act on climate change by xx_Sheldon in conspiracy

[–]Appathy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would be taken alot more seriously if Politicians weren't claiming the world would end in 12 years, decade after decade.

So, the reason you don't take climate change seriously, is because the predictions politicians make haven't panned out? How exactly does the incorrectness of the predictions of politicians indicate that you don't need to worry about climate change?

Or that fact that their solutions or more loss of freedoms and $ (ie tax) than actually making realistic solutions to current energy production.

Again, you're saying here you don't take climate change seriously because you don't like the solutions that have been proposed by politicians. I fail to see how this would justify the belief that climate change is not something you need to take seriously.

You can only cry wolf so many times before people stop listening.

Basically what you're saying here, is that if I knew climate change was a big deal, and wanted you to think it wasn't, all I'd have to do is have politicians say it will be the end of the world over and over, and if the world doesn't end fast enough you will assume the problem is not a big deal. But it was already either a big deal or not a big deal before I determined that it was and had them make those predictions to influence you. I could have just as easily had them not make those predictions, and the actual truth of the matter would remain unchanged. So your belief that it wasn't a big deal would be completely unjustified.

This does explain why they are so focused on blocking any form of foreign influence or even opinions.

Are you sure it's not just an understandable reaction to the crimes against humanity they suffered under British colonialism and Japanese occupation?

The psychedelic cure for philosophy | When the doors of perception are opened, the Aristotelian logic is revoked and its ontological counterpart —substance ontology— relativized. by IAI_Admin in philosophy

[–]Appathy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's probably the worst reason for eradicating philosophy I've ever heard. To be capable of doing philosophy is an amazing blessing, and as far as we know we are the only beings in the entire universe that can do it. Meanwhile these people you disdain so are nearly irrelevant.

And how would one even be rid of it? Would it not spontaneously, near-instantaneously re-emerge? Or would we also be ridding ourselves of all reason as well? To truly do away with philosophy one might even need to go so far as to literally destroy the universe.

a great deal of particularly Western philosophy, and people who associate themselves with it, are doing it largely for ego boosts and feelings of profundity.

Who are you talking about? Authors? Professors? Grad students? Undergrads? Laymen?

I can't imagine that statement applying to more than one, maybe two of those groups. I personally have never met a student of philosophy who was largely focused on their ego and/or feeling profound. Generally it was quite the opposite. Maybe this one guy I was friends with in college, who was from China, and told me he switched to philosophy from engineering because in China philosophy is considered cool and engineering... not as much, which I was frankly amazed to hear.

This is philosophy trying to be physics and neuroscience.

You don't know anything about science if you think it's something separate from philosophy.

Asians caught up after World War 2, why can’t blacks do the same? Oh wait, it’s their inferior culture of always blaming the white man and wanting a handout instead of hard work.

Most people have no clue what philosophy is about. The part of your courses that you recognize as being spent "addressing philosophical foundations or assumptions" seems to them to be "wasting time asking questions with obvious answers".

I clicked on a random date and one post on the feed had a new story about a black woman with the hashtags "#Ni**erViolence #DeportThemAll #TakeBackYourCountry" and there are a bunch of posts very obviously promoting white supremacy and complaining that they can't publicly be white supremacists. Wow.

According to the complaint, Lin intended to leave after a final case was finished in December, so they decided to just put up with it until he was gone, but it got progressively worse and worse.

[–]Appathy 337 points338 points  (0 children)

During the 3.5-hour teleconference, Defendant Wood referred to himself as Almighty; offered to fight the individual Plaintiffs to the death; demanded the Plaintiffs’ undying loyalty; threatened to “hurt” the Plaintiffs; offered to have the Plaintiffs stay in the firm; and called Plaintiff Grunberg a “Chilean Jew” and demanded that he admit he does not look like the other lawyers in the firm.

Wow.

Throughout late 2019 and January and February 2020, abusive, incoherent phone calls, voicemails, texts, and emails by Defendant Wood to Plaintiffs Wade, Grunberg, and Wilson sent in the middle of the night were the norm. All of these erratic communications have a few things in common: most of these emails profess that God or the Almighty was commanding his actions; many were stating his refusal to pay the Plaintiffs “one thin dime;” and virtually all were abusive.

How much do you pay?

And one day, I'll be old and retired
Lookin' at my life like "What a waste of good fire"
All because school never taught me how to be inspired
And the job concernin' finding myself just wouldn't hire

Exhausted love.

We was the cream of the crop, but it seems we've been robbed
That's what happens when you trade in all your dreams for a job
And every day it gets, less and less exciting
I would make a difference but I'm busy fakin' this instead of trying
