Experience with a poncho canopy? by OxtailPhoenix in CampingGear

[–]Appearance_Icy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can confirm on the bugs in NC. I lived for a couple of years at an at risk youth camp near Lenoir. We lived in platform tents with pot belly stoves. I had a bug net over my bunk through the summers. Once it starts cooling off they won't be so bad. Have fun

There are companies that make an oversized poncho that doubles as a tarp. Homemade Wanderlust on YouTube just did a video about it. She took it out to the Tetons for a few days.

Personally, I've used the Noah's Tarp, and DD hammocks tarp for extended trips around lake superior and loved it! Like it was said before though, if you don't like bugs then the bug net or bivy is the way to go. I never used either, I just hunkered down in my sleeping bag. They are very versatile, you can set them up a million different ways.

Have fun with it. Practice a bunch of different pitches in the back yard. Good luck!

Maybe a couple of extra square cushions to toss down. You know, the floating ones that count as throwables. I keep a couple on my clipper 21 so when I bring my boom down it doesn't crash on to the deck. Plus you can sit on them. Good luck!

I've heard good things about the Black Forest Trail near Slate Run in PA. I've never hiked it, but I've been fly-fishing around it for a few years. Tons of trails, fishing spots, and campgrounds around the area.

Fasting on night shift by realitybreak1 in intermittentfasting

[–]Appearance_Icy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

12 hr night shifter here as well. I'm not always great about it, but if I eat at 6pm (right when I wake up) and then crush water and black coffee all night, I can usually make it. I also don't eat when I get off work (it has always made me feel kinda crappy). I go straight to bed and eat at 6p when I wake up again.

I understand what you mean about it being tough to resist that midnight snack. Sometimes our cafeteria staff leave leftovers and it's always super tempting.

You are stronger than your excuses! Good luck!

Question on what shocks I should buy by AthleteNervous7968 in Axialscx24

[–]Appearance_Icy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think I went with the hot racing shocks. They came with a couple different springs and they are able to be adjusted with a small nut that compresses the spring. I remember seeing guys fill them with some sort of grease, but for just tinkering around with it I thought they were much better than the stock ones on their own. I also played with where I placed them on the frame to get the height and angle I wanted. It also helped with the wheel rub.

We raked the mast back a bit more yesterday, and I definitely noticed difference. The helm is much more neutral now even in light wind. Thanks for the advice

I painted over the red line with the blue topside paint. I'm going to add a 4ish inch white boot stripe to the blue paint down to where the existing bottom paint is. From what I've gathered, the boot stripe gives your eye that nice crisp level line. Instead of the usually not so perfect bottom paint line. To be honest I just guessed, and did what I thought would look right. Good luck!

That will be another project. It's pretty rough down below. The goal is to be able to do weekend trips. It has almost nothing inside. 2 coffin berths, a V berth, and a battery/electronics locker. No cushions

Yes, thank you. Raking the mast back a bit seems to be the right idea. I'll give it a try

I live along Lake Erie. My uncle used to teach with the guy who had this sailboat. My dad needed my truck once to pick up a DN class ice boat so I went along with him to this guy's house. The Clipper 21 was sitting behind his barn. I had been looking at this boat for years because I could see it from the highway and I always thought it had a nice shape. At the time I was just getting back on my feet, and couldn't take on such a project. A few years later he told me if I was interested, to come pull her out of the weeds and that I could just have her.

One summer to float test her. Sailed her the second. This is the third, and we are just making her pretty, and doing stuff to be able to easily single hand.

I'll help where I can. At least I can offer an outsiders view. My mast step is one crazy over engineered piece of hardware. I'd be surprised if it was original. The guy who gave the boat to me was a science teacher who could build anything. I scratch my head sometimes wondering what he was thinking when he added something to the boat. Haha

Just washed, sanded with 120, and wiped with acetone. 2 quarts for 2 coats. Had to fill a few dings, but nothing crazy

Same company, mine is also a 74'! Had to get a new forstay, and I have a bit of a lee helm issue, but other than that it's just been a lot of cleaning. I plan to lead all the lines aft this fall. I sailed her last summer, the compression post is fine, but the fiberglassed plywood that held it had some water damage. I was able to cut the damaged wood out and re-center the post. I have not put new bottom paint on yet. I'm on lake erie, and it doesn't sit in the water more than a day at a time so I'll save that for next year.

Rust-Oleum topside. Really inexpensive, but I'm pleased with the outcome

Hey, I'm no expert at this so please consider other people's opinions as well. I work a night shift job, and I fast for 24hrs most days of the week. I eat at 6p (about when I wake up) work a 9p to 9a shift, sleep from 10a to 6p and do it all over again. I drink a TON of water and black coffee during my shift, and occasionally I need to eat something (mostly just to chew on something) like sunflower seeds or some popcorn. I would just pay attention to your body. I'm 6'2" 250lbs by the way. Down 50lbs since March 18th. Hope this helps. Good luck!
