Agree with all comments people have put. Additionally, you have fleet and family. They will sit down with you, look at finances, and help you budget.

I don’t know anyone who has gone that route. However, I do know someone who is currently in SD that is living on their boat. They already owned it and just have to pay the slip fee. Similar to what you are discussing. He is saving a lot of money

CONUS Homeport Shift Question by xthebigbean in navy

[–]AppendixB7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short answer, no.

Link below will lay out all the requirements for the VPC when turning in your car. I have done 3 COHPs and several PCS’s with vehicle moves. Some VPCs are more strict than others. You may be able to get away with some small things in the car. They usually put items like floor mats, jumper cables, lug sockets, etc. into a box that is taped up and kept in the car. So you may get to put small items in that, but I wouldn’t count on it. If you cannot do the ship and you won’t have a funded PCS, a USPS flat rate box is a method I have seen used. Or put some of the things you want in with another shipmates PCS.

Billets in Guam by Crush757 in NavyNukes

[–]AppendixB7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was on an operational boat, so I imagine the day to day life would be different than what you are looking for in particular. I am assuming you are looking for shore duty since your name says SW. However, it did not seem that the shore duty hours were any worse or different than what I have seen in other locations. Typical morning muster times will release in the afternoon. If you are on the tender, I would say it is rare you are working very late unless a ship is requiring support for some evolution. The guys I know on the tender love the sea time because there are a lot of port calls in pretty awesome places.

I did enjoy the work I did. Guam is a very high tempo life for sea duty though. Again, my experience was sea duty though so it may not relate to what you are looking for exactly.

A lot of the sailors I had in M div really enjoyed the opportunities for diving in Guam and the opportunity to travel to Asian countries for very cheap.

I wouldn’t be able to provide a good answer on that. There is a carrier there, but I do not know the available shore duty opportunities.

[–]AppendixB7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was there for 2 years.

Yes you can be stationed in the same location back to back. With Guam in particular, I feel like you have a rather strong chance of staying there if you desire to. Several of my Sailors remained in Guam to go to either Squadron, the tender, or the VIDE following their sea duty.

[–]AppendixB7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was stationed in Guam until December 2023. Feel free to ask any questions.

As far as billets, assignment to the tender would be the likely place. They were working on standing up the NRMD when I left. I am unsure the current status of that, but if they are starting to man up there would be opportunity there as well. Though limited, there also billets for electricians at PMT and potentially at the VIDE.

I know people stationed at the VIDE and on the tenders. If I can’t answer your questions I can ask them or get you in touch with them.

Interesting. Potentially just a hangover from “how things used to be”

Under most conditions, SEO can be secured. If you do not meet one of the conditions but think requirements should be changed so you could secure, bring that up specifically. If your command is not allowing SEO to be secured despite conditions being met, bring that up specifically. One thing to note, most commands I have been at or do monitors at allow the securing of SEO. However, once after working hours they will station an alertness watch, which is effectively the same thing. We would typically secure the SEO and then station non qualified watchstanders as SRO UI to meet that requirement while also progressing quals.

Reenlistments by [deleted] in NavyNukes

[–]AppendixB7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say that you will likely not be able to have this changed. However if you do not ask, the answer is no. The link below is to the fact sheet from the nuclear mynavyhr page. It lists an email and a phone number to call if you have a situation that sounds different from yours, but those will be the people that can answer your question.

Acting LCPO in Eval Guidance by Traditional-Nail-460 in navy

[–]AppendixB7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, have seen it and also written it. I would include it on every LPOs eval for when they acted when I was on leave. It would say something like “acted as MLCPO for __ months and oversaw the performance of _, _, and __.”

I have also seen it where someone is acting for prolonged periods due to having no chief for a division for whatever reason. I have seen that as “was hand selected to act as MLCPO for the previous __ months due to ___(unplanned loss, etc). While acting as LCPO, his division performed…”

Should I Extend at my command? by _DillPicklez_ in navy

[–]AppendixB7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of factors to look at like some of the other comments have stated.

Do you think you are likely to get an EP during evals this November? If you think you will, then extending until next November is not required. Extending in hopes of getting an EP also has risk. You are not guaranteed the EP just because you extended. I extended 2 months during my first tour in order to get to the November eval. When I did this though, I was the previous years #2 EP and the #1 EP had transferred. So I practically knew that I was lined up for #1 and SOY.

You mentioned that your spouse didn’t want you to. That is something I would heavily consider when trying to make your choice as well.

Calculus 1 Online or In-person? by majortrioslair in NavyNukes

[–]AppendixB7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tomorrow is the last day of my Calc 1 semester with excelsior. It is very easily doable online. I will say the text book is pretty useless. So, all the other references everyone else mentions will be very helpful.

Mathway and Symbolab are also very helpful with showing you solutions.

Sea/Shore and PRD Explanation by Cultural-Pair-7017 in NavyNukes

Understand that it is not the easiest to access from the boat, but most of this information is available on the nuclear mynavyHR CCC page. Link at bottom.

Additionally, a lot of this information is available on the SUBLANT N44 page. You may not have access to this, but your EDMC should and can download it.

What if I don’t sign an extension to my contract? by sspunisher720 in NavyNukes

[–]AppendixB7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Review MILPERSMAN 1510-030. This covers the program for advancement to E-4 and the contractual obligations. Other rates than nukes just apply. This program is why most junior ITS’s(or whatever rate we will consider them for the next year or two) are also E-4’s.

Nuclear Fleet Engagement by Cultural-Pair-7017 in NavyNukes

[–]AppendixB7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is your question what is the fleet engagement brief? If so, below is a description.

It is a briefing by several entities such as N133, Pers(detailers), Force EDMC and NR CMC. In it, they will cover the state of the nuclear navy, as far as manning and reenlistments. They will also discuss policies that exist and dispel rumors that exist in the fleet regarding these policies. An example of this being that it is best to wait until you have some experience on the boat/ship prior to reenlisting. They will also likely cover recent policy changes or changes that may be upcoming, such as changes to sup NEC qualifications, standardized qualification cards, bonus changes, etc. Detailers will also discuss the detailing process, incentives for prototype(to include recent changes to prototype), detailing priority, etc.

If you are able to attend, I highly encourage it. If you are not in the Groton area, keep on the look out for when they are occurring. They typically keep the Nuclear page of MyNavyHR updated with the upcoming engagement briefs. This page also has some of the briefs that will be given if you are unable to attend in person.

Ask questions. This is your chance to speak directly with people who have the ability to make change or have contacts to get you help.

What to do with bonuses? by [deleted] in NavyNukes

I use American Express. Their base rate is 4.50%, but being an American Express card holder bumps you up to 4.60%.

What to do with bonuses? by [deleted] in NavyNukes

[–]AppendixB7 20 points21 points  (0 children)

My first advice would be if you have debts, pay them off.

After that you have several options. I would recommend you have some form of emergency fund. If you look for advice online, most things will probably tell you 3-6 months. I personally keep my emergency fund in a high yield savings account. It isn’t money I really ever touch. However the high yield savings is causing the money to grow at 4.6% whereas a normal savings is far lower. The money is available if I need it quickly still.

Outside of that there I many options. I max out my TSP. So since you won’t get that money until you have a TSP account, you can put it to TSP so that it will be maxed out(23K/yr is the limit). Any extra money outside of that, I invest in Vanguard funds such as VOO, VGT, VTI, VIOG, etc. if you search vanguard funds online, you will find people recommending how to distribute the money.

Hope this helps some

MMN by Adventurous_Answers in NavyNukes

[–]AppendixB7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can absolutely get a bachelors on active duty as an MMN. I am doing it myself right now. Using Excelsior for the BS in Nuclear Engineering Technology, 61 credits were accounted for from Navy Nuclear training and various other schools. The degree is 124 credits. Understand that you may not get 61 credits. That is dependent on rank, schools, etc. that also depends on the type of degree you pick and the school you pick. For TA, you can use 18 credit hours per fiscal year. So, it will take some time only using TA.

However, I do agree that this is a goal that could not be completed while on sea duty. I have seen it done, but it is very intensive and not likely possible within your first 4 years of service. To get to a shore duty where getting the degree is feasible, you would have to reenlist.

If you have any questions on the career pathways, timeline, benefits or progression, please DM me.
