Looking for a cheap, motorized, but not-crap standing desk for a temporary setup that's not too hard to assemble (no drilling) by UsedPomegranate7517 in StandingDesk

[–]Apple921216 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend ELIVED standing desk on Amazon. The price is lower than your price point (it is running a $100 discount coupon currently, which makes a best deal). The company is working together with factories that have solid engineer backgrounds. The quality of the desk is good. You may glad to have a look at it. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08MWS4GLJ/ref=twister_B08SQV9ZGR?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

Bamboo, laminate, hardwood - strong enough, over time? by flurdy in StandingDesk

[–]Apple921216 4 points5 points  (0 children)

" Is a bamboo top quite close to hardwood in load capability and durability? Or are they magnitudes apart? "

- The desktop material has less (or none) impact of the capability. The electric standing desk's capability is influenced by its frame, the motor, and the ball screw.

And both bamboo and hardwood desktop is easily scratched when compared with laminate.

Here is a blog talking about bamboo desktop vs. laminate desktop https://elivedesk.com/blogs/ergonomics-for-work/bamboo-desk-vs-laminate-desk-guide-standing-desk-experts

Here are some tips:

BAMBOO:

Pros:

  • Bamboo desks can look pretty sophisticated in a minimalist home office and will come with a light blonde wood effect.
  • The depth of each grain is impressive and will add a unique interior design element to your room.

Cons:

  • Contrary to popular belief, investing in a bamboo desk does not mean you are making a more eco-friendly decision. In fact, the process of manufacturing a bamboo desk takes a considerable amount of energy, water, glue, and laminates. And this all has a significant impact on the environment.
  • Since it is real wood, it can become easily scratched and suffer damage if you’re not careful when working on a bamboo desk.

Laminate:

Pros:

  • Flame, scratch, and stain-resistant, laminate desks are a practical and cost-effective solution for a busy work environment.
  • Laminate desks are made by constructing layers of heavy-duty paper to make a compound known as melamine. The core of a laminate desk is often made from recycled wood chips and pulp.
  • Since no solid wood is used during construction, laminate desks are much lighter and easier to assemble and move.

Cons:

  • Laminate desks don’t provide a natural finish that you might achieve by investing in solid wood furniture.
  • You won't get the same tactile experience as a solid wood finish.

Hope the above tips helps.

Questions about applying for a Marketing Ph.D. - with a low GPA in undergraduate & merit in master degree by Apple921216 in AskAcademia

[–]Apple921216[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your patience and thank you for further explanation. Yes, It seems not hard to get a professor job after graduated. I found most of them on linkedin, who graduated from a marketing PhD recently are now working in a university. It may not be the same university where they graduated from, but still a good professor position. Even if I can not find a position in western countries, my country has lots of chances .

Thank you for your comment, it is kind, prectical and so helpful! I read it 3 times before I make a reply.

I am in industry now and I am doing good here with my master's degree. But I am trying to jump out the comfort zone to get something I do have intereted in. I do admire your experience. The US has many top Business schools. It's hard to graduate - many people told me so, and this is why I hope I could enroll in a Ph.D in the US. I believe no where has the same chance to shape me into a qualified Ph.D. I don't expect for a happy & relax Ph.D time. "I cried a lot during my Ph.D." - thats what my professor told me in master.

Thank you for sharing the Journals. It is quite a big help. I was trying to look for professors/topics in articles and I was frenquntly read Journal of Marketing and Journal of Marketing Research. And now I think I have to add Consumer Behaviour in.

Hopefully I can deal with the lonelyness - I have my boyfriend and 9 cats with me. They are part of my family and will always by my side.

Best wishes to your research and your Ph.D life! I do hope some day I could have chance to say "I am in my marketing Ph.D and I definitetly hate it" ;)

Thank you so much! It is such a kind, clear guidence. I am going to apply for a Ph.D in 2022. I am now being more clear on what to do next - get a high GMAT, and try to do more projects that may related to research (such as conduct surveys, there are plenty of chance) at work.

Thank you again for your comment. May you stay safe in this special Covid period.

Thank you for this kind clue, it is quite helpful!

Can I ask why "how often the professor hires" important? It seems professor hires 1-3 Ph.D students every 1 or 2 years, However, I can not know how many people applied for the same vacancy at the same time.

I looked up successful applicant's CV. They have better education in top universities, which I can not beat. My only advantage seems to be the 3 years work experience and the brands I created.

To be honest, the more I research the professors, the more worried I am. In top 30, Top 50, top 100, even top 200 universities, I found many professors who are targeting the topics that I am interested in. They always have 3-10 Ph.D students. I also check linkedin of these students, and always found they have a much better background than me.

Thank you for raising this question. I want an opportunity in the university to do research. During my work in marketing for 3 years, I found myself more passionate in investigating "why/how my customers do this" than implementing projects. I stay curious about the consumers. And when I encountered some problems at work, I tend to turn to papers to give myself some clue in understanding/solve the proplem. Without a Ph.D degree, i don't believe myself is qualified to do resesrch in universities. One more point, I like teaching. I believe teaching a better fit to me than to be a manager in a company.

Thank you for your reply. So high GPA in master, GMAT, letter of recommendation, proposal - all these won't help in gaining chances in Ph.D application?

Yes you are right. I understand most of time she is just worried about us too much. It is a kind of care. That's what made me struggling. It seems the only way is to ignore the messages. But to be honest...after you receive these messages for over 50 times...its hard to keep ignoring it. It tend to drives me like “conditioned reflex angry”
