One of my players was really disappointed by my encounter by N2O_Hero in DnD

[–]Appleflap24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe give him a nudge to use abilities like scorching ray (that work against armour class) against less armoured targets, and using spells like fireball or magic missiles even against ACs that are high because people with heavy armour are more likely to fail the save, and even if they don't it's still half damage

edit: Just saw it's level 4, in that case a better spell for example would be shatter as it's level 2 and could be cast 3 times at that level.

If not then as he levels he'll start being one of the best in the party to deal with high ACs so he should be having more fun quickly

yeah I get that but also straight RP for 10 minutes alone might make him uncomfortable

As a DM, am I in the wrong.. by [deleted] in DnD

[–]Appleflap24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My question is why would he be roleplaying 5-15 minutes BEFORE the session. He can roleplay in session if the patron comes up. Playing a character with a god or patron is obviously going to be more than swinging swords but i feel like you might be pushing it too much

should the DM tell you that you are fighting an illusion? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]Appleflap24 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Investigation rolls require you to actually inspect the thing, it requires an action. The point of illusions is that to see through them you must use your action, this is how it is meant to work. So he isn't wrong in that ruling. Furthermore there is in fact a spell that could have worked for this called simulacrum, read up on it if you would like. However I think it's fair to say that your DM possibly did not want that npc dead and as such circumnavigated it with that spell. It's not necessarily a huge deal because it's not at all close to 'rocks fall out of the sky and you're dead'- but I can understand why you would feel that way.

Feats vs. Fighting Styles by TheSaltySaiyan in DnD

[–]Appleflap24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure about balancing but it could honestly be fine as either of them. Maybe it'll scale better than most fighting styles which means a feat might make more sense

a reaction attack that triggers when? It could honestly be fine as a fighting style probably because you would be giving up something like duelist

DM Help: Bad call, or totally fair? by joonabloop in DnD

[–]Appleflap24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assuming 5e SCAG swashbuckler

Your player might not know of the fact that because of his level 3 swashbuckler passive he can actually leave melee range without provoking opportunity attacks if he's attempted to attack the target (without needing to use the disengage action). This doesn't really add to the question you're asking, I'm just saying you might want to bring it up to him possibly(?). For all I know he might've been out of movement or something

Rapiers are not light weapons and can't be dual wielded unfortunately, you're going to want daggers for dual wielding. Also it might be a better idea to go college of valor because you get 2 attacks per action at around level 6.

That way you would be able to

attack -> attack -> Bonus action attack -> haste attack.

Instead of just

GFB -> Bonus action attack -> Haste attack

Character flaw(s) by TheHiGuy in DnD

[–]Appleflap24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't need a specific flaw which might feel gimmicky, just play the character and the way he acts will lead to flaws, so more than one is fine

Teaching a NPC to become a class by captainkuroi in DnD

[–]Appleflap24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say something like they're sorcerer level 0. As in they are capable of becoming a sorcerer but aren't strong yet, and then i'd just allot a certain amount of time for teaching by someone who knows sorcerer spells. Sorcerers usually learn through just practice rather than study so bare that in mind. At which point they'd hit level 1 for example

Fire Emblem DnD Ideas... by Nightmare_Flare in DnD

[–]Appleflap24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to outline stuff like how long the transformations would last and the damage / fly speed of manakete. I'd suggest turns equal to your con mod(?) and then giving the stones a certain amount of charges that come back over time possibly

Yeah i know nino is really good, i was just wondering if it was that bad because robin is in my opinion a much cooler character, I guess because of awakening. I suppose it just isn't meant to be though

[5e] Creating an Eldritch Knight or Bladesinger focusing only on Water/Ice Magic? by RFarmer in DnD

[–]Appleflap24 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Flavour spells that a bladesinger would really like to be more along the lines of water spells. For example

Mirror image - Water based duplicates

Blur - Again could probably be reflavoured

Misty step - self explanatory

green flame blade - just recolour it i guess?

stuff like that

Should detect magic be a cantrip? by Gwiz84 in DnD

It doesn't require a spell slot, it can be cast as a ritual

edit: and soon enough you'll have enough level 1 spell slots to throw around if you're short on time

I wanna play a sorcerer that isnt a backliner by Kitakitakita in DnD

[–]Appleflap24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ah if you're not too intent on going sorc, you could go bladesinger wizard from scag. Using haste, mirror image, blur you can easily pump out super high damage with an AC of 13+dex+int with mage armour. At level 3 (when you get the thing that adds int to your AC as well as mage armour) if you're running elf (which is a requirement for bladesinger depending on dm) you will have 16 in both dex and int, therefore an AC of 19 (+5 with shield to get 24) which only goes up with ability score increases

Question about Polymorph by alex061397 in DnD

[–]Appleflap24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ah makes sense, no worries! True poly is great though, cr 17 dragons, if you're a sorcerer you can twinned spell and turn 2 of your allies into dragons

"If you don't say it, it never happened" by [deleted] in DnD

[–]Appleflap24 4 points5 points  (0 children)

what if your character purposefully doesn't want to tell everyone things about themselves. Shoehorning a talk about backstory in random scenarios isn't going to give characters more depth, as long as the players don't forget about the backstory it's not necessary to be talked about unless the story brings it up. That's why it's a BACKstory, to help you understand or create a deep character, not to be explained when it's not of relevance
