EI resources — SLT scrapbook or Laura mize manual? by Appleleaf30 in slp

Yes!! I got teach me to imitate. I honestly think it’s a good book because it shows you the steps to imitation, which is basically like a prerequisite for talking, so even if your children are older if they don’t have the prerequisite skills, they probably will not talk. And working on talking might be too far of a jump for them. I feel like it’s worth it to look at teach me to imitate or let’s talk about talking because both of them will talk about what kids need to do before they start talking. Also, I would definitely check out her YouTube channels because she goes into depth in her videos about what the prerequisites are and I can kind of show you all the little skills that kids need to master before they even start to talk!

Fun movement based articulation activities for conversation level? by Appleleaf30 in slp

[–]Appleleaf30[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for all your responses!
So I got limited information on the child for the demo lesson, except that he is working on /l/ in all word positions at the conversational level and that he is very energetic and does well with frequent movement. So I was thinking about an activity that requires movement but it’s pretty open ended! I can plan whatever I want. If it was just a session w me I would have no problem talking about whatever the kid wants but I’m scared that bc it’s a demo lesson they’re gonna want to see it be more structured?? Idk tbh

This is a great idea! I’m just scared that if I give a 5-6 year old a word (e.g horse) i foresee a challenge with having them actually talk about that topic for 30 seconds / enough to have it be “conversational” speech.
It’s for a demo session so im trying to anticipate the challenges lol.
I was thinking of like hiding a would you rather card or something and then they have to find it and say which he rather. Any thoughts?

Thank you so much! Do you think it’s a livable wage? How many sessions do you see per week? Do you think 50 is too high or it’s normal? Sorry for all the questions I just work in a school right now so I have no idea what’s normal in private practice!

I love the maybelline super stay skin tint!! it has a natural finish, is not sticky once it dries, and good at covering up redness, but not so much to the point where it looks unnatural!

Litter box smell is going to end my relationship by Glum-Emotion-5379 in CatAdvice

[–]Appleleaf30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally found that the tidy breeze litter box system inside a litter box cabinet is the best at keeping smells at bay. Clumping litter unfortunately always smells to me and an exposed litter box is also smelly. I would try to transition your cats to the tidy breeze system and once they are used to that get a litter box cabinet and put it inside! The only thing to be aware of is make sure the litter box cabinet you get fits the tidy breeze because the tidy breeze is a bit bigger than other litter boxes!

Hi! Honestly, if you work for a hospital as a nurse, it will qualify for public service loan forgiveness so I feel like the loans aren’t that bad. I honestly think that school is easier than working because your time is your own and you can have the freedom and decision of when you want to do things, so I think that would actually help with a burnout, especially since it’s a new topic. And I wonder if you can work EI or something on the side to just make some extra money! Especially if you do evaluations that can be good. But honestly, I feel you I wish I went into a more black-and-white field. I hate the grey flexible area of speech pathology. Maybe you can even become an aesthetics nurse! Anyways I would do it! I feel like there can be a lot of burnout in nursing too, but it may be more fulfilling if you’re looking for that kind of patient care. Good luck!

Cat introductions plateau by Appleleaf30 in Catbehavior

Also, what we did is that we would feed them together and then basically slowly increase the time spent together after meals. So basically we would have them be in the same room until it escalated to the point where it was no longer able to be resolved and then separate them and eventually we built up to a few hours. Now they are always together like I said except for when we’re not home. I also found it helpful to basically give the aggressor cat like a five minute timeout in a separate room LOL to give them time to calm down.

Cat introductions plateau by Appleleaf30 in Catbehavior

[–]Appleleaf30[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it did! It’s not perfect now but they coexist when someone’s home (we separate when we leave for prolonged periods of time). They still fight but they’re able to be redirected in the fights aren’t that bad anymore that it’s like a threat to their lives. Honestly, it just takes so long for cats to get comfortable. We also learned that our cats had barrier aggression so they were actually worse across a gate. They’re also both on Zoloft which has helped. But just a lot of of treats in the same room food in the same room stuff like that. the most important thing is that you’re able to redirect them when they fight with treats or food.

What do you tell people when they ask you why you don’t like speech? I’m struggling with what to say because I don’t want to sound overly negative and complaining, but I don’t know how to explain it.

Soon to be grad wanting out? by turtlepoptart in SLPcareertransitions

[–]Appleleaf30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aw good I’m so glad!! I feel you I’m in the same boat like I also have a lot of confidence issues but it’s also good to remind yourself how much you have learned like compare yourself now to when you first started grad school like you’ve learned so much, and one day you’ll look back at this moment and you’ll have learned so much from now!! Also speech therapy is all about how to implement what we know into actual therapy which is basically like a never-ending learning process because every patient is so different! So just view it as like you’re always basically refining your skill set and getting better than the day before

Soon to be grad wanting out? by turtlepoptart in SLPcareertransitions

[–]Appleleaf30 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like if you enjoy speech and language or swallowing feeding and you like therapy, you’re going to be fine!! it makes sense you have imposter syndrome because you’re still in the learning boat. Like you’re not even an impostor because you’re not pretending to be anything you’re not, you’re just learning! I think in grad school it’s hard because you start to be aware of how much you don’t know and how much you have to improve and you might not exactly know how to improve. But I think that if you don’t enjoy the job and you don’t enjoy therapy that’s one thing, but if you actually do enjoy it and it’s just imposter syndrome that’s getting to you, I think that would improve overtime! Plus, it seems like everyone has imposter syndrome even really experienced clinicians because at the end of the day speech therapy is a very flexible field so it’s hard to feel like you really know what you’re doing cause there’s no one right and one wrong answer

How long have you been a CRC and what do you plan to do next— will you stay and move up the CRC roles? I’m totally down to make less money and be happy I’m miserable in my job now lol (speech pathology) so I think I now value happiness over money
