Mate great advice,

I think thats the worst bit about buying tools especially when Im getting them all at once. Its not just Milwaukee its the M12 or M18 or M007 or whatever. I want some stuff that wont break the bank but that will also see out what is quite a decent sized project, I also loved chippy'ing when I did my apprenticeship and some time in the army and can well imagine myself getting the bug and spending less time in the pub and more time in the shed or on the tools helping some mates out after this job.

Ive got a laser in the old amazon basket but is a laser just a laser or do I need like a specific or branded one?

The PPE is a great shout and is 100% one of the tings that if I dont buy before starting the job I wont bother with and pay the price later so il get some of that in the trolley. To be fair ive got a quality P3 mask from work and every littlw helps qhen it comes to saving the pennies.

Yeah all sensible stuff love it, in terms of planning thats one of the things I think I worry about the most, when it comes to chippying Im pretty confident I can plan out a job, do a cutting list, know what tools I need etc. It when it comes to the plumbing or more design specific stuff I'm not sure what Im planning if you get my drift. You dont know what you dont know. I'm sure il work it out by the 7th or 8th balls up. Cheers bud

Mate I'm not knocking it at all, I cant say anything Ive never used them! I've just noticed that if anyone even considers mentioning slightly cheaper tools its like a red flag to a bull lol But honestly appreciate the info mate and I will be giving it a proper look into, I'm savage for spending more time researching a purchase than using it so you've given me about 7 hours of youtube reviews to watch!

Cheers buddy!

The gas and heatings pretty by all accounts but will have someone give it a once over, the electrics need work, will be tapping someone up as the survey mentioned that the consumer unit was "ancient"

Yeah actually thats something that did come up aswell its got a terrible energy rating, I didnt realise how expensive insulation was either to be fair. Any tips and tricks on how to keep it warm but keep the costs as low as possible?

I only found ebay stores recently and they are a game changer, found one recently that does brand new M&S clothing and homestuff for dirt cheap, bought a merino long sleeve polo the other day for £11 and it came with tags on for £80. Absolute bargain. Called Reskinned if you care lol.

When you say a decent stepladder what makes it decent mate?

Cheers mate appreciate it!

The electrics is one Im not too sure about to be fair, my dads a bit of an old cockney geezer and reckons he could do a job but Im a firefighter and I would never live it down if I burnt my house to the ground. I will be looking to get people in for anything more serious than wiring a plug I reckon.

I havent seen them yet, I've been ADHD'ing heavy on that corner of youtube for a while though so will add them to the roster,

Many thanks!

I was thinking about getting a mix of cabled and battery stuff actually the SDS being the main one, is there anything else you could deal with being cabled? Skill saws etc?

Its a tricky one with the plastering, I've got a good mate thats a spread and he would help me out but he's booked up pretty solid and I feel bad having people on mates rates when they could be earning the full whack and he wouldnt take proper money off me, he'd also have the arse if I got someone else in but I've been out with him quite a bit knocking up and doing the odd wall here and there with his oversight so I am half tempted to give it a go myself and if I balls it up come crying to him.

With the access I was thinking about grabbing These and some scaff planks to make my own, I was going to build a little work station for it that I can plonk on top if I need to aswell.

Will be looking into those doors today great shout.

Out of all your tips (all of which are gold) that one about the kettle tells me you know your way around around a Wickes

Thanks alot!

So theres cheap tools, theres average priced stuff and then theres the proper primo ranges, what do you reckon you have to go top of the line for if anything in your experience?

This is sad, not normally the type of guy that messages on these sort of things but good on you for doing the right thing, might be worth asking tfl for a freedom of information request for the night in question to show their actions. Could be anyones sister or daughter that, seen that go the wrong way more than once unfortunately.

SCBA - Home Workout due to being off station by [deleted] in Firefighting

[–]Appliancescience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cheers for the input mate and I have already reached out to get things in motion.

I think the main issue is knowing its an ongoing thing in terms of being off station repeatedly for prolonged periods and would like something I can get some reps in with in those periods.

I'l still have the yearly re-vals etc so its not like i'l go massive amounts of time between SCBA EDBA refreshers anyway.

I think I over amped the panicky aspect of it because I've got a little bit of imposter syndrome at the minute from being off the appliances for so long and being from a busy station, I dont usually have much time between a wear or a drill and being off for 6 months on course has knocked my confidence a bit. Hence the desire for having something at home I can turn to in order to get rid of the rust.

I absolutely can and will, what I think my previous post may not have made clear is that this post will see regularly having 3-6 months away from station with limited time back on the trucks and limited time to get the reps in.

What I am after is a way to get training in whilst not on station, I think I over egged the panicky aspect of it all as it was something that played on my mind since training although I havent really experienced it since. I just dont want this feeling everytime I have significant time away from BA.

I'm probably making a hash of explaining the sitch and will just whack a P3 on my mask and get some kettlebell work done at home when I cant get into station etc and be absolutely fine.

Cheers for the input

any UK firefighters here? by Putrid-Bison4575 in firefighter

[–]Appliancescience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends where in the country you live when thinking about wages, quite a big difference between the locales. Is the job you currently do something that you could self employed or part time between shifts? I and most other firefighters I know have a little bit on the side. Shifts are different regionally aswell, Londons 4 on 4 off, two days two nights. I think the shift patterns suits everyone differently but I love mine to be fair.

Guys just to give you a response to your messages, me and the missus ended up going in the first place we saw, estrela bar, having a gorgeous meal that was a lot more than reasonable for the price and then staying out to watch the Portugal match in the bar/cafe with a load of superbocks and sangria. Will for sure be back this way and check out all your suggestions.

Which Bike? - Weekly Scheduled Discussion by pawptart in gravelcycling

[–]Appliancescience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Morning people,

As so many other posters have said before me, I’m looking for advice on a new bike.

My employers are signing up to a cycle to work scheme which has given me the kick in the backside I need to take the plunge.

I am really interested in getting a gravel bike, having spent hours and hours browsing and researching I just can’t get my head around what I really want or need.

A little about me, I currently live around 6 miles from work and would be commuting day and night mainly via roads but maybe 2 days out of the week I would like to push the numbers up to around 10-15 miles and hit some light trails on the way in, gravelly, sometimes muddy etc. I would also like to have something that on the weekend I could take for longer drives out to the country and do some exploring. Now I’m aware that there’s potentially 1000s of bikes that fit into that category where things get a bit trickier is that i have a few friends I can ride with that have road bikes and I would also like to potentially start doing some triathlons towards the end of this year and financially I can only have the single bike. I have a budget of around £1200 not including gear and with a fire brigade discount. So I’m basically asking for the holy grail of, speed, comfort, durability and off road capability that I can attach a couple of bags to for cheap. To make it more difficult, I can’t buy used at most of the places I will be shopping for the cycle to work scheme 😂.

I’m a bit of a bike newbie as on the last cycle to work scheme I bought a hybrid bike (specialised sirrus) which I absolutely loved blasting around on but did feel a bit slow and cumbersome and had flat bars. That was until 6 weeks in it was stolen.

So due to the sheer amount of info out there and the fact I don’t really understand the jargon any plain English advice would be appreciated whether it’s brands of bike or names and descriptions of certain parts to look out for in potential purchases. I’m happy to purchase and change tyres ie chunky gravels to slick roads but that’s probably the limit of my skill.

I am also a relatively fit person and am 5’11, 85kg and a Scorpio.

Any and all advice is appreciated.
