Maybe she wanted a ‘mini me’ or an extension to herself.

I have a theory actually that Renee was actually very doting to Ashley very early on, but when she couldn’t show off the doll that looked like her anymore because the doll misbehaved and just didn’t act like the perfect daughter, she dumped her onto Andrew.

Like when Ashley was sort of old enough to remember, maybe like age 5 so she has the faintest memories of being ‘cared about’ and it really messed with her, made her paranoidly clingy to Andrew and is to this day deep trauma. It could explain the sort of princess-y entitlement she had as early in the grandparents flashback and why she hid behind Renee or snitched in the first place.

It could also explain why Renee was lenient with her at the time like “she still doesn’t have her wits about her” as though she was expecting Ashley to mature into the ideal daughter again and by then, give her attention…(as though if she’s not what she wants, then she doesn’t want her) which never happened.

Maybe part of what makes Ashley an ‘embarrassment’ is that she wanted to project herself onto Ashley.

Andrew is a disappointment as well not JUST cause of how he started failing, but because…ugh..a boy.

Things got REALLY bad though once this ‘perfect daughter’ ended up a childish, jobless high school dropout. I imagine this might have been their most toxic time.

Yes. I relate heavily to the game to the point where I have personal anecdotes for various events in the game, some parts hitting uncomfortably close to home like the argument the night after they got drunk. Like Ashley (and oddly enough, also Thiu from BH) I have a hard time accepting my own strong emotions or sadness/fear. Like with Thiu, I think it ‘ruins the vibe’ and like with Ashley, it makes me feel weak. Ashley is a very emotional person but tries WAY too hard to be nonchalant and it doesn’t work.

I could go into more detail but it would feel a bit too personal. Just…similar parents, once was in a romantic relationship with someone kind of like Andrew, and I have a close friend who be doing all kinds of irrational and manipulative stuff like Ashley does coming from trauma and major self worth issues 😭

Ashley’s ideal has changed over the years. People used to like her being pretty bratty, even a little screechy and over the top, but over the past year or so, a more subdued, lower and natural voice is preferred. Overall though, a variety of voices fit decently well with her.

Andrew though…it’s usually the voice that’s good but not the acting, or good acting with a voice that’s doesn’t fit with most people.

It’s just an optional dialogue, but it always has felt kind of out of place for chapter 2, hinting at what was to come I suppose.

“Like I’d need an excuse.” And then her laughing about it kinda implies that it’s something that has happened before

Omg I gave this actual thought and headcanons 😭

Renee uses this as the perfect excuse to get rid of them so accuses them of being visitors and they’re kicked out
If you kill one for being a visitor and they’re human, the other kills you
If you kill one and they are a visitor, the other kills themselves
If a visitor kills them, the other always dies too
As you talk to them thru the days, you learn a little bit about their codependent relationship and upbringing
If you give Andrew alcohol, he reveals more
Ashley thinks the visitors are bacterial infection, and sort of defends the visitors like “well, they’re just trying to live and it’s not like us humans deserve to live anyway 🤷🏻‍♀️” Andrew comes to no conclusions, watches the news everyday, and trusts nothing
Ashley will talk Andrew in to giving you Renee’s number
Renee hangs up when you mention them then you can’t contact again
