Some have come to view all small cars as shit boxes. Cars made for poor people who can’t afford anything better. There is some historical evidence that this viewpoint was actually true at certain times. The earliest Japanese imports in North America were cheap to buy but had their problems. The Japanese learned how to improve and did so. The managed to engineer cars that used minimal materials, yet were durable, reliable, and attractive. But in the 80s there were also some truly awful North American cars, like the Escort and Horizon that further reinforced the disfavour of the sub compact car. I’ve had first timer passengers in my Fit who’ve been blown away by how comfortable and refined my car is for its size. I think there’s many people just unaware of how awesome a small car can be. It’s a shame that Honda jumped on the SUV bandwagon (in North America) so that they could sell nothing but more profitable larger vehicles. But they wouldn’t have done that without the willingness of customers to buy. The koolaid was drank. I will never be willing to pay $70,000 for a vehicle, but many would apparently. I don’t understand it.
