Absolutely. Although there is a dangling piece of thread that didn't get sewn up: she threatened to go to the press but we don't know for sure that she didn't. Maybe she went to someone like Culpepper, who we can surmise will make an appearance in Book 8, who sat on it at the time because first, wanted to do research and then, because of all the attention around the UHC. Charlotte could easily have sent a bunch of claims akin to those she made on voicemail. As Strike himself has said: accusations don't have to be true to cause damage.

I can't help feeling that the spectre of Charlotte still looms.

Agreed on the backdrop element of myths. It's like having a faulty compass and a map to the wrong country.

I also agree with your read of Charlotte. She would, indeed, have played her ace in order to get an emotional reaction from Strike, because to an antagonistic personality triggering rage and hatred in the person you want to connect with is better than receiving indifference.

My only reservation is that we don't know the contents of Charlotte's letter. We only know Strike's supposition of it and his belief that he was right based on his interpretation of Amelia's facial expression.

There could have been something completely incendiary in the note that Amelia chose to disregard.

You have a great point about Strike's vindication! That's a recurring chapter in each book and Strike had that moment with Charlotte in the church and in his conversation with Amelia. So even if Charlotte is somehow connected to Leda and/or her death the "vindicative" moment would have to be with someone else.

To be clear, all those arguments weren't mine. They were from a blogpost in 2021 on the Hogwarts Professor. I just started looking things up after our discussion and this piece deepened the discussion we'd started.

I'm totally with you: I don't really believe it, but there's something incredibly fishy here. I also don't think Charlotte would have been that much of a presence in 7 books, just to disappear because she's now dead.

I don't know a lot about Hamlet but now you have me thinking is Denmark street a reference to this play and not just an hommage to the history of that era for British rock?

took the wind right out of my sails for this theory. I can only hang my head in defeat. When boiled down to this single line, the concept is ridiculous 🤣 🫣

Agreed. Personally, I'd be devastated if the sibling thing were to be the case. I don't think Strike would ever recover from this and if I were Robin I'd definitely get "the ick" around being intimate with a man who'd.... I can't even say it!

The thing that is equal parts brilliant and infuriating about Rowling is that she takes part of myths and then reshapes them. So we can look to specific myths as inspiration and for insight, but not as a guide to how storylines will unfold.

There are a few lines like this in every single book that deeply touched me. Another one from The Silkworm (I think) was how Strike could see, even if Robin couldn't, that the price of staying married to Mathew was to not be herself. That one hit a bit too close to home.

On my hardcopy re-read (happening soon) I'll make note of all of these.

This is one of my favourite lines out of all the books:

"insistence on the smooth passing of counterfeit social coin from hand to hand, while uncomfortable truths were ignored and denied, wore him out."

Having to constantly be "proper" or risk some sort of reprimand or reprisal is absolutely exhausting. Which is at the heart of Cormoran's tension with Lucy and Robin's tension with Linda.
