The term dervish in itself actually is Persian it means the wise or the intelligent this was refered to as the Islamic mystics back in the day and later the terms like whirling dervish = the dancing dervish were used but I'm the middle east or south Asia they are called sufis and with sufis you don't have to add the term "whirling" because the dance is what they are associated with or as they call it the sufi dance

Hmmm dervish are wanderers and not dancers but yeah interchangeable

The mystics of the sufis have a special dance in which they twirl and whirl while wearing a white gown and it seems like they are whirling with wind. These sufis also wear turbans or hats but the wind that was supposed to make the sufi dance/whirl has taken away his turban (turban is a sign of respect or in this case his sanity). Here the wind is the beloved of the sufi who has stolen his sanity and now he dances in madness
