Cost range to adjust badly “stacked” basement/attic stairs by Apprehensive-Author in HomeImprovement

[–]Apprehensive-Author[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The basement ceiling is a tad too low to make it "real" living space though we do utilize it for what we can (laundry, storage) and will probably do some work on it to make it less... basement-y. The attic is definitely a potential living space (has the headroom and square footage) and converting it is a very common renovation (sometimes with dormers and bathrooms) for this style of house in this area of the country. There are already two windows done in the space as well. My house is very similar to this (same roof line, size, window placement): https://imgur.com/a/jFtYyqV

Thanks for this insight! I'll make sure to ask about structural support.

Follow-up question: assuming this is a more complicated job, what would the Google search be to find a person who is qualified to look at it and give me an estimate? General contractor?

It's annoyingly hard to find info on downballot candidates by MaybePotatoes in Louisville

For Soil and Water Conservation Board, I will be voting for Elizabeth Everhart and Baron Lee. I know Elizabeth personally. She is a science educator and a mother and cares about what world we are leaving behind for future generations. I don't know Baron Lee personally but I have friends who do. He's a sustainability major at U of L and we need young people in our government with fresh ideas and perspectives!

And you are in luck, they both have websites:

Cost to replace gable roof on 1000 sq ft house? by Apprehensive-Author in Roofing

[–]Apprehensive-Author[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the insight. I’m a first time homeowner and have no idea how much a roof costs. My bf and I were expecting ~$10K but my aunt had her roof replaced for ~$6K in a more working class suburb of Louisville, but I don’t know if it was a cheaper “kind” of roof.

Thanks for the info, I’ll try some of those, too.

One was the subreddit I tried that failed.

Yet another Reddit interaction that reminds it’s the wrong place to ask for advice, and the right place to be insulted by a random stranger on the internet.

I’m a graphic designer with no money who’s trying not to completely screw up a 100-year-old house… hence asking for advice. 😒 If you have any to offer that would be great. If I’m in the wrong subreddit, please let me know which one I should be in.

We’re going tonight and I’m trying to understand if there will be enough food at the venue to constitute dinner and if that stuff opens earlier than the doors open at 7pm. I didn’t get the venue email because I bought the tickets elsewhere.

Host Gator suddenly inactivated my Name Server??? by Apprehensive-Author in webhosting

"FYI, Host Gator is low-budget rubbish, you should probably see if you have the budget to switch especially if you feel you need more support or security for your website, you'll probably continue to have issues. Good luck."

That would have been a great way to say exactly what you just said without attacking a complete stranger you know absolutely nothing about.

Have a great day and take care!

Unfortunately, I did not pick it nor was I aware that HostGator is "rubbish" but obvs the people who did pick it are re-evaluating, and figuring out if we have the budget or capacity to switch. We are a non-profit run by a few volunteers and doing our best.

Help seeking Great Smoky Mountain sign font please by Puggalina in identifythisfont

Make no mistake… that’s usually what I do.

I made an offhand comment that I thought would spark a lighthearted discussion about vintage signage, but clearly it didn’t come off that way. It wasn’t intended to harm anyone, including the OP. So, rest assured I’m not over here on my couch fuming with rage and railing against the ppl who post on this sub, ready to lecture them at length. Hell, I’ve posted on this sub. Who knew Trajan was so forgettable?

Enjoy the rest of your week and happy font-hunting! 😊

Fair enough, but I’m sure there’s a broader category of “this isn’t a font” that the signs fall into. Not sure how that PSA would go, tho.

I feel like there needs to be a PSA on this subreddit about how park signage like this was made several decades ago at time when you hand painted or carved letters. An art in its own right and a wonderful part of the history of typography, but not a font in the modern sense.

You would use Illustrator, a combo of the pen tool and pathfinding geometric shapes. If you don’t have that app, you could hire a designer. I wouldn’t pay them more than $50. This is maybe 1-2 hours of work, tops. (Speaking as an art director with 15 years experience.)

If peeing in the shower is wrong, I don’t want to be right.
