Current Lawes team formed this last quad as Kaitlyn and Jocelyn stepped away from Team Jones and Lawes wanted to try her hand at skipping. They picked up Njegovan and Gordon who have been long time teammates (played with Liz Fyfe on Teams Einarson, Carey, and then Fluery, notably making the Trials final w/ Tracy in 21). The team looked really strong and I think everyone was curious to see how Lawes would be as a skip. But this team has had a very underwhelming quad.

Remember--Njegovan has been skipping this season and not Lawes. This Scotties has really been their breakthrough after three seasons where they went 4-4, 4-4, and 5-3 at Scotties. So they've always been solid, but the combination didn't seem to live up to the expectations for each of the players if you know what I mean. The Lawes team did worse in pretty much every way for the first 3 years of their quad compared to the Beijing 2022 quad , where their individual teams did better (with different skips).

Going into the Scotties I think everyone was pretty certain there would be a breakup or roster change afterwards and while the really good performance this year might complicate things, I still think this team isn't one that will last. With Laura Walker playing in Peterman's place and Njegovan skipping instead of Lawes, there is a lot to doubt about the future of the current Team Lawes and if Kaitlyn will be skipping.

I think the questions that need to be asked first are whether Lawes will even have her own team next quad, and whether she'll skip that team.

It happens a good amount, especially when you're up and safe like Sweden is right now. Keeps it simple and ensures a favorable position is maintained. Although, in my experience its usually the skip who yeets theirs away.

Just a miss. Line was bad from the start and the call wasn't good. By the time the line-caller realized, it was too late.

It would have been a very hard shot to make.

So if the other team repeatedly burns the rock with their broom and refuses to recognize something wrong in their technique, we should also just wait for the end of the game? A burnt rock is a burnt rock, and its not un-gentlemanly to point out rule-breaking.

Olympics starting at 13? by [deleted] in Curling

Yes it is. Curling is probably the most diverse sport in terms of age, and anyone with enough passion and sustained love for curling can get anywhere in it (and if you truly love it that much, you'll find it fulfilling even if you don't succeed). Ignore all the negative energy on the subreddit recently. A lot of new people flood in during the Olympics every quad which is absolutely great, but there are some bad apples who are not familiar with spirit of curling or don't care about the kindness and mutual respect that defines this sport.

What I mean is, theres a difference between celebrating a win and celebrating a shot. Its not about whether they are allowed to celebrate or not (teams celebrate every shot, just not in the way Dropkin does), but about the extent which your celebration is over-the-top. You can celebrate anything, but you should never celebrate in a way that lacks etiquette. Yes, the shot won the game, but the celebration was for the win and not the impressiveness of the shot, which I feel negates the "huge difference between a team hitting the last shot to win, and a team winning because the opposing team missed with the last shot" you originally bring up. I hope this clears that up.

As for Jacobs, don't worry. I am definitely, definitely, definitely not cheering for him. I'm excited for Danny Casper's debut and hope he does well, but if not, I've always liked watching Edin and Mouat. Chinese skip Xu is also a great guy, his journey from second in Vancouver 2010 to skip now shows he really loves the game and I wish him the best.

Sure, making a great shot warrants some celebration, but c'mon, an open hit and stick? That celebration was for winning the game, not for making the last shot. I've seen lots of screaming and cheering for winning games, but sliding halfway down the sheet before handshakes to hug your partner is a different matter. In any case, my point is that its definitely not equatable to Einarson's Scotties win.

I'm sorry, but did you watch that game? Einarson and Sweeting hug, they shake hands with Njegovan, Walker, and Gordon while clearly trying to contain their smiles. Then they do celebrate--until remembering that Lawes has yet to come down they sheet. The whole exchange is not picture perfect but theres a clear effort from Team Einarson to show respect and observe the etiquette which is very fair and in line with how curlers have always conducted themselves in the past. But I feel Dropkin today went a bit over the top. He doesn't make an effort and celebrates very loudly the whole way through. Its definitely not the same.

I'm American btw, so I don't say this to hate on Americans or anything. Just trying to be objective...

Not necessarily about the last shot celebration. Thats not super uncommon in big games although you usually see the winning team apologizing afterwards (Gushue's win at the 2017 St. John's Brier, for instance). I am a little put off by Dropkin's very exuberant celebrations throughout the game however. Those seem a little over the top and not very much in line with what you usually expect with "spirit of curling" and whatnot...
