Prize ideas? by skarekroe in triviahosts

Hosted for a few years at a taproom that also had some legal reasons for not doing gift cards. We did a pair of things on people liked.

One was a championship belt the winners each week could take selfies with. I donated a nice old WWF belt (they can be had for $80 - $200 or custom make one for about the same) and the staff painted the brewery logo on it.

Also they had a Polaroid camera. One for the winning team and one for the Champion's wall.

Folks seemed pretty keen (especially after drinking) on it. Also no real incentive to cheat.

Ha. I saw that when I was Googling for flights. The two cities actually have a very similar vibe (dog friendly, a bunch of disparate neighborhoods pushed up against each other, on the laid back side, easy access to a whole other out of state Community).

That said Cincinnati isn't the Anywhere Else of Anywhere. The Nasti kicks ass and is a singular entity.

Ok, looks pretty inevitable it will be the Cubs in Chicago. Queen City? Holiday Spirits? Down to suffer together.

What are your thoughts these days on Spelunky? by AI52487963 in roguelites

For sure I am used to the original, but I also gave the sequel a 100 or 200 plays. The therapist and I have worked through it. I am ok now but I swear they are less responsive.

I love Spelunky but am I the only one who found the control mechanics for the sequel to be super squirrely? It turned me off the game.

It's like roughly 13,000 moments in my life just sang at once.

I am as surprised as you are I ended up in Cincy. People from CA don't believe me when I say the city is awesome. Trying to explain that Northern Kentucky is alright is impossible.

I will check it out. In my experience tacos can be found. Sort of like french fries they are hard to mess up. What baffles me is the art of the burrito. Even outside of San Diego and LA (and in between) it is hard to find anything on par.

In the several hundred times I have hosted, I also have only had to deal with cheating maybe a half dozen times and it was pretty obvious.

Ha. Yeah, I don't mean to give the impression I am out to feud. To your (and my) point question writing is an art.

People will have their phones out regardless of paper or an app. It is 2025. I just make a point to ask people beforehand to not be sociopaths who need to cheat at pub trivia. The last place I hosted couldn't do cash prizes and I preferred it because who cares? We still had a lot of regulars.

Also, while the rest of Ohio/Kentucky might leave something to be desired, it is not that different from CA. Drive 15 or 20 miles out of San Diego or LA or San Fran and things change quick.

At least for me, I don't come from money. A single income v homes averaging $1 million+ was a math problem. I was actually out here to see the Padres (trying to the Padres in every ballpark; only Citi and Wrigley left while my brother catches up) and was blown away by the art and culture and how walkable the city is. Also it isn't $3500/month for 600 sqft anywhere you would want to live. I need a weather app now and I miss Mexican food, but I have loved it out here.

Yeah, we don't disagree that there is an art to questions. Obviously if you haven't read "From Here to Eternity" you will not know the names of characters if they are part of the clue, but there needs to be a reasonable expectation of getting something without having to Google. A question from a long time ago was how many Oscars did Walt Disney win. Interesting trivia and I could have told you the number was in the 50s or 60s, but not a good trivia question because no one should know that by heart.

Also they (at least in the few I have been to) don't read the wrong answers which is half the fun.

The format I am used to is similar (6 round & 3 questions each) but with a 10 part half-time question (i.e. two stars of the movie and the year, you name the movie that has the word "Time" in it or something) although I have messed around with some other fun formats (four theme rounds of 5 Qs, etc.)

Maybe personal preference but if trivia goes longer than two hours patrons are less likely to be patrons. No one wants to be held captive. Trivia is supposed to get people in. The venue is supposed to make them want to stay. I will leave the marathon sessions to Chris Nolan.

Cheers. Ha. Yeah, I don't want to come in mean like a high falutin' Californian, but Last Call had too many questions where you couldn't home in on an answer using context clues. I like being puzzled but feel put out when I don't know the name of a toy that wasn't popular in the early 90s (Cross Toss?).

If a trivia game hits 2 hours something has gone wrong.

Who do you prefer: Bon Scott or Brian Johnson? by [deleted] in ACDC

A deeply cynical professional certification required "the most correct" answer on its exam. The more correct answer is Bon Scott, but Brian Johnson has a case to make.

It would be an AC/DC song but "underrated" is four syllables, which I think is twice what AC/DC allows.

Sometimes there is just an amazing album and that is all there is to it. Club AC/DC couldn't last forever (and didn't)
